No. 3 UCLA Opens 2024 with Big Win

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (1-0) got off to a hot 6-0 startย in the first quarter and never looked back, cruising to a 19-6 season-opening win over No. 25 Marist in the first game of the UCSB Winter Invitational at Santa Barbara High School on Saturday morning. UCLA improved to 4-0 all-time in the series history.
The Bruins had 12 players score in the contest, led by a career-high effort of three goals from graduate student Brooke Doten. Five other Bruins had multiple-goal scores with graduate student Hannah Palmer, sophomore Taylor Smith, junior Molly Renner, freshman Olivia Ouellette, and junior Nicole Struss all scoring twice.
Freshman Lauren Steeleย got the start in the cage and played the first quarter, tallying five saves while pitching a shutout. Senior Sydney Chiang played the second and third quarters in the cage and had four saves and a steal while surrendering four goals. Freshman Joey Niz played the fourth quarter in goal and was credited with three saves and a steal while allowing two scores.
UCLA jumped out to a 6-0ย lead at the end of the first period. Six different Bruins scored in the opening quarter getting one goal each from Struss (6:47), Renner (5:48), Ouellette (4:32), freshman Panni Szegedi (3:38), and freshman Becca Melanson (2:42).
Both teams battled to a 3-3 draw in the second quarter as UCLA took a 9-3ย lead into the break. Palmer scored her first goal (5:32) to put UCLA up 7-0. Ouellete scored her second of the game (1:53) and then Doten scored her first on a power play (1:06) to push the lead to 9-2. The Red Foxes scored a power play goal (0:37) to end the scoring in the first half, 9-3.
The Bruins won the third quarter, 4-1, to extend the lead to 13-4 heading into the final stanza. Struss opened the scoring with her second goal (7:31). After Maristย scored a power play goal (4:58) to make it 10-4, UCLA scored three unanswered to end the quarter. Sophomore Anna Pearson scored her first on a power play (3:45), Smith scored her first from the front court (0:36) and Dotenย netted her second of the game at the buzzer on a 7-on-6 to make it 13-4.
UCLA won the fourth period, 6-2, to provide the 19-6ย final. The Bruins scored the first three goals of the fourth with freshman Dania Innis scoring a power play goal (7:34), Palmer netting her second (4:59), and sophomore Lily Gess scoring her first (4:02) to make it 16-4. After a score by Marist, the Bruins got two more when Renner netted her second on a power play (1:44) and Doten completing her hat trick with a strong finish from two meters (0:44) to make it 18-5. Marist would score another power play goal (0:16), but Smith scored at the buzzer on another 7-on-6 play to end the scoring.
