Bruins Show Grit in Second Half, Beat Washington 62-44

January 26, 2024 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES - No.2 UCLA Women's Basketball defeated Washington 62-44 on Friday night at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

Graduate student Charisma Osborne led the Bruins (16-2, 5-2 Pac-12) with 17 points and six assists. Sophomore Londynn Jones poured in 13 of her own, while Lina Sontag, Angela Dugalić, and Christeen Iwuala all finished with at least seven points. Eight Bruins contributed to the scoring column to grind out the victory.

The contest got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to establish any sort of offensive rhythm. Apart from a Jones and-one and a couple of easy layups, the Bruins were cold from the field, relying on their defense to carry them through the first quarter. Their defense gave the Bruins a 10-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

UCLA started the second quarter off with a three-pointer from Lina Sontag, which was the Bruins' first make in eight attempts. The rest of the quarter was much like the first, with both teams struggling offensively. With Lauren Betts out, Angela Dugalić took on much of the responsibility of controlling the glass. The senior finished the first half with 10 rebounds.

The Bruins went into the locker room on a positive note, with Osborne ending the half with a much-needed buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Bruins a 23-21 lead. Osborne had six points at the break.

Offense would be much easier to come by in the third quarter for both squads. After trailing 29-32, the Bruins went on a 9-0 run to take a six-point lead. Charisma Osborne took over in the third, using a variety of tough finishes and crafty dribbles on her way to scoring eight points in the third, giving herself a contest-leading 14 points.

Osborne's eight points included two back-to-back and-ones, which got the crowd on their feet and gave the Bruins a hold on the momentum of the game.

UCLA ended the third quarter with a 46-36 lead, outscoring the Huskies by 8 during the period. The Bruins scored as many points in the third quarter as they did in the entire first half (23), highlighting their emphasis on executing Coach Close's offensive sets coming out of halftime.

The Bruins' defense clamped down on the Huskies throughout the fourth quarter, with fearless pressure and exceptional defensive rebounding limiting the chances of the Huskies.

UCLA used Huskies turnovers to generate easy offensive looks, pulling away in the fourth quarter. Jones scored a layup off of her own steal, and then knocked down a dagger three-pointer off of a Lina Sontag steal and assist. UCLA would draw a loose ball foul on the three by Jones, which led to an Osborne three-pointer and a very rare six-point possession. Those buckets were part of a 10-0 Bruins run, which gave the Bruins a 60-40 lead. UCLA managed the game from there and earned a 62-44 victory on Friday night.

Key to the Bruins victory was a 50-37 advantage on the boards, with Dugalić (13), Rice (10), and Iwuala (6) displaying their rebounding acumen and maintaining the Bruins' typical advantage in the department.
