Men's Basketball Registers 65-50 Victory at USC
January 27, 2024 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Dylan Andrews scored a team-leading 20 points to lead the UCLA men's basketball team past crosstown rival USC, 65-50, before a crowd of 10,300 at the Galen Center on Saturday evening.
The Bruins (9-11, 4-5 Pac-12) led throughout the contest, surging ahead by as many as 13 points in the first half. UCLA's advantage never fell to any fewer than 11 points over the final seven minutes of the contest.
Andrews connected on 7 of 15 shots from the field and shot 3-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. He was one of three UCLA players to score in double figures, along with Lazar Stefanovic (17 points, nine rebounds) and Adem Bona (10 points, 10 rebounds). Bona registered his third double-double of the season and the fourth of his career.
USC (8-12, 2-7 Pac-12) received a game-high 10 points from Oziyah Sellers, who finished as the only Trojans' player to have scored in double figures.
The Bruins recorded their first victory at USC since March of 2018, snapping a five-game losing streak at the Trojans' home venue. UCLA and USC split a two-game season series in 2022-23, with each team winning the game at its home arena.
Andrews finished Saturday's game just two points shy of his career-high of 22 points, from earlier this season in a home game against CSUN.
Saturday's contest at the Galen Center saw UCLA out-rebound the host Trojans by a 43-29 margin. The Bruins held USC to its lowest single-game scoring total all season (50 points) and recorded their third Pac-12 win in the last four games.
UCLA's used a 24-4 scoring run midway through the first half to secure control of the game. Freshmen Devin Wiliams and Aday Mara played an integral role off the Bruins' bench during the scoring run.
With the Bruins trailing 22-15 at the seven-minute mark, Williams hit a floating jump shot with 6:28 to play to cut USC's advantage to 22-17. Minutes later after a blocked shot by USC's Joshua Morgan, Williams corralled the rebound and made a layup to slice USC's cushion to 22-19.
On USC's next offensive possession, Williams blocked a shot and Mara grabbed the loose ball. After an unsuccessful shot by Mara, he grabbed his own rebound and made a post basket to reduce USC's advantage to 22-21.
UCLA received back-to-back 3-point baskets from Stefanovic (at 3:59) and from Will McClendon (at 3:27) to surge ahead, 27-22. Andrews' 3-pointer for UCLA at the 2:43 mark put the Bruins ahead of USC, 30-24.
The Bruins entered the locker room at halftime ahead of USC, 37-26.
UCLA limited USC to 29.6 percent shooting in the second half, as the Trojans never reduced the Bruins' cushion to single digits.
Stefanovic finished the game 3-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. He connected on all nine of his free throw attempts, pushing his season free throw percentage to 87.1 (54-for-62).
Devin Williams registered four points and one blocked shot through just over seven minutes of action, and Mara totaled two points and four rebounds in four minutes.
UCLA will return to action at home next week, hosting Oregon State on Thursday evening and Oregon on Saturday night. Game time next Thursday against Oregon State is 7:30 p.m. (PT) in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
