No. 2 UCLA Defeats No. 14 UC Davis, 18-10

BERKELEY, Calif. --ย No. 2 UCLA (4-0) scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back en route to an 18-10 win over No. 14 UC Davis (0-5) in the Bruins' only countable gameย of the California Cupย at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday afternoon. UCLA improved to 22-1 all-time in the series history with the Aggies.
The Bruins had eight players score in the contest, led by a career-high-tying effort of five goals from sophomore Anna Pearson. Freshmen Becca Melanson and Panni Szegedi and sophomore Genoa Rossi each scored the first hat tricks of their young collegiate careers.
Freshman Lauren Steeleย got the start in the cage and played the first half, recording 10 saves and two steals while allowing three goals. Freshman Joey Niz played the second half in the cage and had four saves and a steal while surrendering seven goals.
The Bruins easily won the first period, 5-1. Szegedi opened the scoring with a counter goal (7:21) and followed that up with another (6:50). She then drew a penalty that was converted by Pearson (6:25) and then Pearson went back-to-back with a power play score (5:33) to put the Bruins up 4-0. After a goal by UC Davis, Bruin freshman Dania Innis scored from two meters off an assist from Rossi to end the scoring in the first period (1:39).
UCLA dominated the second quarter, 6-2, to take an 11-3 lead into the break. Pearson completed her hat trick with a score from two meters (7:35) off a nice feed from senior Malia Allen, playing in her first game of the year. Freshman Natasha Kieckhafer made it 7-1 with a strike from the front court (7:05). Then Melansonย scored her first on a nice drive and finish from a perfect pass from Nicole Struss (5:24) to put the Bruins up 8-2. After the Aggies scored, the Bruins reeled off three straight goals, which began with the first from Rossi (3:06) from the front court off a feed from graduate student Brooke Doten. Then freshman Olivia Ouellette scored from the front court off an assist from Lily Gess (1:20) and Pearson scored her fourth on a power play (0:40) to end the scoring in the first half.
UC Davis won the third period, 4-2, to cut the Bruins' lead to 13-7 heading into the final stanza. UCD scored twice before Melanson (4:07) scored her second from the front court to make it 12-5. Two more scores for the Aggies were followed by a second score from Rossi on a power play and an assist from graduate student Hannah Palmer (0:24) to end the scoring in the third quarter.

The Aggies scored two straight goals, but Melanson completed her hat trick (4:04) from the front court to make it 16-10. Pearson then tied her career high with a 7-on-6 play off a feed from Steele (0:47). Then Rossi completed her hat trick off another 7-on-6 play (0:20) run to perfection to end the scoring.
