UCLA Completes Illinois Road Sweep with 3-1 Win Over Illini

October 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer

Champaign, Ill. โ€“ UCLA remained unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play, downing Illinois, 3-1. Jayden Perry opened up the scoring in the first half, and Quincy McMahon and Sofia Cook added second half goals to propel the Bruins to the victory.
ย
All three players were dangerous throughout the game. Cook got the game's first scoring opportunity in the first minute, with a shot that was saved by Illinois goalkeeper Izzy Lee. She also had a second opportunity in the fourth minute that went wide. Perry stopped a goal-scoring opportunity by Illinois in the 12th minute, disrupting a pass and then sending a long ball to McMahon on the counterattack. McMahon's shot was saved by Lee, and on the ensuing corner kick, Lee saved a shot by freshman Nicki Fraser.
ย
Fraser had another opportunity in the 32nd minute and drew a foul in the box that gave UCLA a penalty kick. Perry stepped up to take the penalty, skillfully drilling it top shelf past Lee for her first goal of the year and fifth of her career.
ย
UCLA (12-2-2, 7-0-1 in the Big Ten) had a few chances to double up the lead after Perry's goal but were denied by Lee on shots by Avery Robinson, Kara Croone in her collegiate debut, and Sunshine Fontes.
ย
In the second half, McMahon netted her third goal in the last four games to put UCLA ahead 2-0 at 50:26. Lily Boyden deflected an Illinois pass just beyond midfield, and McMahon dribbled forward all the way inside the box before firing off a shot to the right corner past Lee.
ย
Illinois (6-7-2, 2-5-1) came right back, scoring 35 seconds later when Angie Galo lofted a shot towards goal and into the wind that Ryan Campbell was unable to handle.
ย
With the Bruin lead cut in half, Cook gave UCLA some insurance in the 58th minute, connecting with Meg Boade on a give-and-go. Cook passed to Boade, who returned the favor, chipping it back to Cook in the box. Cook headed the pass down, turned and then slipped past the defense to send a shot to the left corner for the goal, her fourth of the year.
ย
UCLA outshot the Illini, 17-5, and had nine shots on goal to Illinois' two. Campbell had one save in the contest, while Lee had six.
ย
The Bruins return to Los Angeles for the remainder of the regular season, hosting Penn State on Thursday, Oct. 17 and Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 20 before wrapping at the Los Angeles Coliseum against USC on Oct. 27. UCLA and USC are currently tied atop the Big Ten standings with 22 points. ย ย ย
