No. 10 UCLA, No. 16 Penn State Play to Scoreless Draw
October 17, 2024 | Women's Soccer
The Top 20 matchup between No. 10 UCLA and No. 16 Penn State was a thriller all the way to the final seconds, finishing in a 0-0 tie.ย
UCLA was inches away from the game-winner in the final minute when Penn State defender Bella Ayscue cleared America Frias' header off the line after a corner kick. Just five minutes earlier, Maya Evans' quick shot at the top of the box was saved by goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress. Quincy McMahon had another prime opportunity for the Bruins in the 56th minute, squeezing through defenders to get free in the box. However, her shot went just wide of the right post.
The Bruins (12-2-3, 7-0-2 in the Big Ten) were dangerous throughout the game, holding a 20-3 advantage in shots and totaling seven shots on goal in the game. Penn State's defense disrupted several opportunities, and Gress saved six shots in goal.ย
"I thought the (team's) performance itself was very good, one of our better performances of the year," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "I thought it was a professional performance, and I thought we executed our gameplan well. We didn't score, and that's where we need to be better."
UCLA's defense was on point once again, holding Penn State (11-3-3, 5-2-2) to just two shots on goal and three shots overall. Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell handled the two shots on goal by Jordan Fusco, one in the 23rd minute and one in the 84th. Campbell picked up her 12th shutout of the year, a new career high for the graduate student.ย
"I thought we limited them to really one dangerous chance," Aozasa said. "This is a really good Penn State team. They've done well through the year. We are choosing to be very encouraged by this performance."
The Bruins remain unbeaten in Big Ten play with a 7-0-2 record but drop to second in the conference standings, two points behind USC, after the Trojans' 1-0 victory over Ohio State. UCLA will play Ohio State on Sunday at Noon before closing the regular season against USC on Oct. 27.ย
