Johnson Advances Again, Earning All-America Status
November 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas – Spencer Johnson of the UCLA men's tennis team earned All-America status for 2024-25 by reaching the second round of the NCAA Championships singles tournament Wednesday at Hurd Tennis Center, while the doubles combination of Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi was also victorious.
In a match that took two hours and 28 minutes to complete, Johnson outlasted No. 33 Braden Shick of NC State 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(4). At 5-5 in the deciding set, Johnson fell behind 30-40 despite holding serve. He charged back, however, and ultimately took four of the first five points in the tiebreaker and never looked back on the way to his first career NCAA individuals win.
Johnson next faces 42nd-ranked Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois in the round of 16. Miyushi beat Radu Papoe of Cornell 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi broke the serve of Baylor's Devin Badenhorst and Zsombor Velcz – ranked No. 26 – for 5-3 in the first set before closing it out. A back-and-forth second set resulted in a tiebreaker, where Hoogmartens and Tripathi collected the first three points en route to their victory.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi next meet Auburn's Billy Blaydes and Will Nolan, who beat Samir Banerjee and Nicholas Godsick of Stanford 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday.
Emon van Loben Sels, who was triumphant in his NCAA singles debut Tuesday, was felled Wednesday by Corey Craig of Florida State in a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
