Bruins Fall to UC Santa Barbara in NCAA Tournament, 1-0

November 21, 2024 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team fell to UC Santa Barbara 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Nicolas Willumsen scored the game-winner for the Gauchos in the 93rd minute to advance UCSB.

The Gauchos (12-5-4) outshot the Bruins (7-6-6, 3-4-3 Big Ten) 12-6, in a physical contest that featured three yellow cards and a total of 18 fouls. Andre Ochoa led the way for the Bruins with three shots.

In the early stages of the game the Bruins had a great chance to go 1-0 up in the 15th minute of the game. Junior transfer Nikolai Rojel was played through on goal by Nicholas Cavallo, who took the ball down the left flank before crossing it to Rojel, who had his shot saved by the Gauchos goalkeeper, David Mitzner.

Both teams would search for the opening goal in the remaining half hour of the first half, but neither team was able to break through, and the teams remained scoreless heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Bruins held much of the possession and tried to find different avenues to break down the UC Santa Barbara defense. Sophomore Philip Naef, who had come on in the 30th minute, looked dangerous down the flanks for the Bruins, but the Bruins could not find an end product.

On the other side of the field, UCLA's defense limited the Gauchos to five shots and only two came on target in the second half, with sophomore keeper Wyatt Nelson saving both shots on target, and the game went to overtime knotted up at 0-0.

In the overtime period, the Gauchos struck in the third minute of the period when Kaden Standish found Willumsen in the box. Willumsen took the shot first time and hit it into the top left corner of the net to give UC Santa Barbara the 1-0 win, and advance the Gauchos to the second round of the tournament where they will face No. 16 seed Stanford.

UCLA finishes the season 7-6-6, marking the fourth year in a row the team has finished the season with a winning record.
