Malloe Named Nominee for Broyles Award
November 26, 2024 | Football
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe was announced Tuesday as the UCLA football program's nominee for the Broyles Award, which honors the sport's top assistant coaches.
The 65 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America, broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.
Malloe guides a unit that lost seven starters – including first-round NFL draft pick Laiatu Latu – from the 2023 team. The Bruins are currently tied for the nation's seventh best rushing defense, allowing 99.3 ground yards per game, and have intercepted 10 passes to rank 47th overall. Among the interceptions are pick-sixes by defensive back Bryan Addison and linebacker Kain Medrano.
In UCLA's Nov. 8 win against Iowa, the Bruins held the Hawkeyes to 265 total yards and just 80 rushing yards. Iowa entered the game 10th nationally and the Big Ten Conference leader with a rushing-yards-per-game average of 222. UCLA allowed 67.7 total yards per game fewer in Games 6-11 compared to Games 1-5, with the latter stretch including sub-300-yard performances against Iowa and Minnesota (Oct. 12).
The defense has been led on the field by linebacker Carson Schwesinger, a former walk-on who paces the FBS in solo tackles (79) and Big Ten in total tackles (121, third overall). Oluwafemi Oladejo, who made a midseason switch from inside linebacker to an edge spot, leads the Bruins with 13.5 tackles for loss.
The Broyles Award was created in 1996 recognizing Coach Frank Broyles' legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall of fame career as head coach at Arkansas.
