Honorary captains for Saturday's contest include Akeem Ayers, Carl Jones Jr., Adarius Pickett, Mike Sherrard and James Washington.
ย
Ayers was a standout linebacker on the Bruins' 2008-10 squads. Ayers shared the team lead in sacks in 2010 (4.0). To cap that season, Ayers returned an interception two yards for a pick six with just over six minutes left to take the lead and help UCLA to a 30-21 win over Temple in the EagleBank Bowl. He finished his career with three defensive touchdowns. Ayers was named a Second Team All-American and First Team All-Pac-10 in 2010 prior to being drafted in the second round by the Tennessee Titans.
ย
Jones Jr. returns home after starring in the Bruins' defensive front from 2019-23. He finished his career with 91 total tackles (61-30-91) over 38 games and helped UCLA to a 35-22 win over Boise State in the LA Bowl his senior season last year. Jones Jr. is currently on the Chicago Bears practice squad.
ย
Pickett, a defensive back, played in 50 games over four seasons at UCLA from 2015-18, finishing his career with 274 total tackles. In his senior season, Pickett recorded 123 tackles for the 15th-most by a Bruins defenseman in school single-season history. It was the first 100-tackle performance by a UCLA defensive back since Dennis Keyes in 2007. Pickett was named All-Pac-10 Second Team in 2018 prior to signing as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears.
ย
Sherrard was one of UCLA's finest wide receivers in school history, playing from 1982-85. He finished his playing career ranked first in UCLA's record books in catches with 128 and receiving yards with 1,965 (now ranks 13th in both categories). Sherrard was UCLA's leading pass catcher in each of his junior and senior seasons with 709 and 722 catches, respectively. He helped the Bruins to huge wins at the 1985 Fiesta Bowl and 1986 Rose Bowl.
ย
James Washington, a Bruins defensive back from 1984-87, ranks third in UCLA history in career interceptions with 15 and seven in career tackles with 347. Washington played a key role in UCLA's 1985 Fiesta Bowl win over Miami, nabbing his fifth interception of the year to earn Defensive Player of the Game honors. The next year, Washington helped stymie the Iowa Hawkeyes' offense to secure UCLA's 1986 Rose Bowl win. Washington finished his UCLA career as a two-time All-American.
