Gilmer Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. โ Wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer on the UCLA football team was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Monday.

Gilmer logged the most impactful performance of his early UCLA career in the Bruins' 27-20 win at Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Sierra Canyon School product recorded a team-high 88 receiving yards on three catches, including a 48-yard touchdown grab midway through the third quarter for the first score of his career.

Gilmer also hauled in a 25-yard pass on UCLA's first drive of the game to help set up a 25-yard field goal.

Through eight games, Gilmer leads the Bruins' wide receiver group with 213 yards on 16 catches (13.3 yards per catch).

"He's phenomenal,"ย Garbersย said postgame. "For being 18 years old, the maturity and intelligence that that guy has on the football field is really unheard of. He's becoming a guy that I can really trust and really have a lot of faith in. I mean, anytime the ball is up in the air, I 100 percent believe Kwazi is going to come down with it. He's a great route runner. The best thing about him is he always plays fast and plays with speed."

This marks UCLA's third Big Ten weekly honor of the season and second in as many games. Kicker Mateen Bhaghani was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week (Sept. 2) and quarterback Ethan Garbers was selected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 21).

The Bruins return home to face Iowa on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. (PT) for the two programs' first meeting since UCLA's 1986 Rose Bowl Game win. The contest will be nationally televised on FOX.
