Bruins Outrun Hawkeyes, 20-17

November 08, 2024 | Football

PASADENA, Calif. โ€“ UCLA Football (4-5, 3-4 Big Ten) claimed its third-consecutive win, downing the University of Iowa 20-17 at the Rose Bowl Friday night.
ย
The Bruins rushed for 211 yards in the victory behind a season-best 125-yard performance by junior T.J. Harden. UCLA held Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) to 80 yards on the ground.
ย
Redshirt-senior quarterback Ethan Garbers finished the game with 204 passing yards, a pair of touchdowns and three turnovers in what proved to be a battle of Big Ten defenses.

"It feels good (to get my first win at the Rose Bowl)," said UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster.ย "I got the game ball. These are way better than when I was playing. It's way more exciting to get these game balls now. You can't put it into words. It's similar to when I got hired. But I'm a Bruin, and it was bothering me when we were losing. I'm not somebody that takes that lightly, and I just continued to push and push, and these guys never fought against me. There was never any turmoil on the team. They all just knew what we had to do, and I'm just glad I have a mature team who accepted the challenge."
ย
The first quarter began with the Bruins receiving the opening kick. The start was one that UCLA and Garbers did not hope for, as the quarterback threw an interception (1Q, 13:38) in Bruin territory that quickly turned into a Hawkeye touchdown. On the following drive, UCLA steadily marched down field after a touchback on the second kickoff of the game. The Bruins combined its run and pass games to get into scoring position. Garbers got hit while throwing into the end zone and errantly found a defender by air for the second-straight drive. That turnover led to an Iowa field goal, and the Bruins trailed 10-0 as the second quarter began.
ย
UCLA got just over the midfield marker before facing a fourth-down decision at Iowa's 39-yard line. Sophomore kicker Mateen Bhaghani was called upon, and he delivered. Bhaghani unloaded to help UCLA get its first points on the board; the San Diego, Calif., native sent the football 57 yards and split the uprights to set a new season-long field goal make (previous: 54 vs. Oregon, Sept. 28).
ย
Momentum began to swing when redshirt-junior Carson Schwesinger snagged one at the logo for UCLA's first takeaway of the quarter. Harden broke off a 29-yard rush up the middle to help get the Bruins into scoring position. Redshirt-junior Titus Mokiao-Atimalala reeled in a 2-yard touchdown reception from Garbers with an Iowa defender draped on his back; the Bruins tied the ball game with an extra point by Bhaghani, 10-10 (2Q, 8:05). Iowa began to move downfield before redshirt-junior Kain Medrano made a play on the ball. The linebacker stripped Iowa's Brendan Sullivan as the Hawkeye quarterback crossed half, and UCLA began with a ball in Iowa territory before the half.
ย
ย
The Bruins chipped away to move towards the enemy end zone. In a scramble, Garbers tucked it and tried to take the pigskin down the sideline but got it punched out for a fumble of his own; the turnover gave Iowa a touchback (2Q, 3:38). The Bruin defense stood strong and caused a three-and-out for the Hawkeyes. Redshirt-senior back Keegan Jones hurdled a defender for the first down after Iowa's punt. Garbers later found redshirt-senior Logan Loya for a 29-yard reception into the end zone. Loya bounced off a Hawkeye to break a tackle before keeping his balance to cross the line for a score.
ย
ย
UCLA was up 17-10 at half after three-straight second-quarter scores. The Bruins recorded 119 passing yards and 146 rushing yards at the break. UCLA was 6-for-8 on third down conversions.
ย
Redshirt-sophomore Jalen Woods connected on a crushing blow to Sullivan on third down to stop Iowa short of moving the chains on their first opportunity after the break. The Bruins could not get their offense moving on the first UCLA drive; redshirt-sophomore Brody Richter lobbed a 55-yard punt into Iowa territory to give up possession. The Hawkeyes took over on their own 39-yard line, but would end another possession in a turnover. Schwesinger dove to make another interception, the second of his career (3Q, 8:37).
ย
ย
Garbers threw a quick strike to Loya for a 19-yard gain to get UCLA into the Hawkeye half. A penalty and pair of short gains led to another 57-yard field goal try by Bhaghani, who missed on second attempt (3Q, 4:06). UCLA's defense was called for a penalty that took a 57-yard Hawkeye three off the board on the next drive; Iowa started the fourth quarter on the UCLA 24 after the flag.
ย
The Hawkeyes found the end zone by ground, tying the game at 17 apiece (4Q, 11:29).
ย
The Bruins took a fair catch for a touchback to begin again with a clean slate on the board.ย  Harden broke off a 16-yard gain down the left sideline on a pitch to gain UCLA's first new set of downs. The Bruins quickly earned another behind freshman receiver Kwazi Gilmer's 6-yard reception. Gilmer pulled in a 20-yarder two plays later, making two Hawkeye defenders miss and collide before being wrapped up.
ย
Jones found himself in some trouble behind the line of scrimmage; the running back was almost tripped before he escaped and turned on the jets for a 12-yard gain down the right sideline. The Bruins settled for a 27-yard field goal make by Bhaghani to give UCLA the lead back, 20-17 (4Q, 4:49).
ย
UCLA's defense added some grass stains to Iowa's white jerseys and stopped the Hawkeyes deep in their own territory. The Bruins got a friendly bounce from Iowa's punt and took over on their own 46 with a three-point lead and 3:53 on the clock.
ย
The Bruins kept eating away at the clock and pushing down field with the ground game, stringing together a 5-yard gain by Garbers and a 14-yard carry by Harden. Iowa called timeout to stop the clock at 2:17. After Harden lost a yard on second down, Iowa opted to burn its final timeout six seconds later.
ย
Garbers rolled right and tossed it to Mokiao-Atimalala on third down; the Bruin receiver snagged the ball and backpedaled to move the chains in a clutch 9-yard gain. Harden took 15 more yards to claim one final first down before UCLA kneeled out the clock. The Bruins claimed their third-straight win with the three-point victory.

UCLA's rushing defense limited Iowa's Kaleb Johnson,ย the nation's second-leading rusher entering the game, to just 49 yards on 18 carries.

Up Next (at Washington โ€“ Nov. 15)
The Bruins head north to Husky Stadium next weekend, facing the University of Washington on Friday, Nov. 15. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. PT; the game will be broadcast on FOX.
