Schwesinger Earns AP All-Big Ten Acclaim

December 10, 2024 | Football

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Redshirt junior linebacker Carson Schwesinger on the UCLA football team was awarded Associated Press All-Big Ten First Team honors, the wire service announced Tuesday morning.
ย
Schwesinger was awarded All-Big Ten First Team status by the conference earlier this month on Dec. 3. The former walk-on was one of the top defenders in country, being named a Butkus Award Finalist and Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist.
ย
Schwesinger led the Big Ten Conference during the regular season in total tackles (136), total tackles per game (11.3), double-digit tackle performances (nine), solo tackles (90) and solo tackles per game (7.5). The Moorpark, Calif. native still leads all of FBS in solo tackles (90). The 90 solo tackles were the most by a Big Ten defenseman during the regular season in at least the last 22 years.
ย
Schwesinger tallied the first 100-tackle season by a Bruin since 2018 (Adarius Pickett) and first by a UCLA linebacker since 2017 (Kenny Young), finishing with 136 in 2024. Earlier this season, Schwesinger recorded a streak of six straight double-digit tackle performances, which was the longest by Bruin since Eric Kendricks' Butkus Award-winning 2014 season. At Washington on Nov. 15, he recorded a career-high 17 tackles for the most by a Bruin defender since 2016 (Jayon Brown, 19 TKL vs. Colorado on Nov. 3, 2016). Schwesinger was UCLA's leading tackler in 10 of 12 games this season. Additionally, Schwesinger drew the first 10 starts of his career in 2024.
ย
In UCLA's 20-17 Homecoming win over Iowa on Nov. 8, Schwesinger nabbed the first two interceptions of his career to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week honors. The week prior, Schwesinger led the Bruins with 13 tackles and recorded two key pass breakups and a sack in a win at Nebraska on Nov. 2. Schwesinger registered 13 tackles and a career-high 2.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss against Minnesota on Oct. 12. His 4.5 TFLs were the most by a Bruin since Takk McKinley in 2016 versus Utah.
