UCLA Defeated by Utah, 197.300-196.975

LOS ANGELES – No. 8 UCLA held the lead after the first two rotations against No. 4 Utah but was unable to hold on, dropping its first Pac-12 Conference meet of the season to the Utes, 197.300-196.975.

Bruin sophomore Selena Harris won the all-around and three events for the second consecutive meet, scoring 39.675 in the all-around and recording her second-straight perfect 10 on vault. She also claimed first place on uneven bars and floor exercise with scores of 9.950.

UCLA had an explosive start to the first rotation on vault with a season-high score of 49.525. Harris led the way with her third career perfect 10 and second of the season on her Yurchenko 1.5 vault. The Bruins had two other sticks in the rotation, both on Yurchenko full vaults. Leadoff vaulter Emily Lee scored 9.85, and Chae Campbell hit for a big vault that netted a 9.925. Katelyn Rosen and Nya Reed also added strong scores of 9.9 and 9.85, respectively. UCLA finished the rotation with a .325 lead after the Utes scored 49.2 on uneven bars.

"I was super proud of how they came out today and vaulted," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "They've been working really hard on landings and details in the air, and I felt they came out and really showcased that. Overall, our landings were the best today on vault, which was really cool to see."

The Bruins extended their lead to 0.425 in rotation two, scoring 49.3 on uneven bars, while Utah scored 49.2 on vault. Harris again led the way, scoring a season-high-tying 9.95. Margzetta Frazier also tied her season-high with a 9.9. Campbell and Frida Esparza each added 9.825s, while Rosen scored 9.8.

Although the Bruins did not have to count a fall on balance beam in rotation three, they were unable to break 49, scoring 48.875. Only two scores were in the 9.8 range – Lee's leadoff 9.825 and Ciena Alipio's 9.825. Utah, meanwhile, scored 49.5 on floor and took a two-tenths of a point advantage, 147.9-147.7.

Scores remained low on balance beam for Utah to start rotation four, with the first three routines going 9.825 or lower, but two out of bounds deductions on floor exercise made it difficult for UCLA to catch up. Rosen's 9.9 and Harris' 9.95 kept UCLA in it, but Abby Paulson's 9.925 followed by Maile O'Keefe's 9.975 to close the rotation clinched the win for the Utes.

The Bruins will next host California on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2pm.
