LOS ANGELES - The No. 9 UCLA gymnastics team hit 24-for-24 and recorded its third-highest score of the season, posting a 197.775, but was unable to overcome No. 3 California's program-record 198.400. The Bruins recorded a season-best 49.575 on uneven bars to trim Cal's lead to three-tenths at the halfway mark, but the Bears earned their second-highest team totals ever on both floor and beam to keep the Bruins at bay.
The Bruin leadoff performers were exceptional, as junior Emily Lee scored career-highs of 9.95 on beam and 9.9 on vault and floor. Senior Chae Campbell kicked off UCLA's bars rotation with a career-high 9.95 and received a 10 from one of the judges.
UCLA fell behind early in the meet, scoring 49.125 on vault in the first rotation, while Cal opened with a 49.65 on bars, the team's second-highest bars total in program history. Lee's leadoff 9.9 tied for the highest vault score of the meet, and freshman Katelyn Rosen had the Bruins' only other score above 9.8 with a 9.875.
The Bruins gained momentum in the second rotation on uneven bars, which saw a season-high team score of 49.575 and four season-best performances. Campbell led off with a masterful 9.95, besting her previous career-best of 9.9. Maddie Anyimi continued the trend with a season-best mark of 9.825, and Rosen followed with a 9.9. After Margzetta Frazier's 9.825, Frida Esparza and Selena Harris closed the rotation with matching scores of 9.95, with Esparza setting a new career-high and Harris tying her season-best. The good vibes continued on bars in the exhibition spot, with freshman Alex Irvine scoring 9.9. UCLA cut into Cal's lead, closing to within three-tenths (99.000-98.7000) after the Bears went 49.350 on vault.
Going into balance beam in rotation three, the Bruins relied on a few new faces to the lineup, as Campbell made her first appearance on the event since the season opener, and Esparza competed for just the second time this year. Both seniors were stellar, tying their career highs with 9.925 and 9.9, respectively. Lee, again, led the way with her leadoff 9.95 that tied her career-best score. Harris contributed a 9.85, and Rosen and Emma Andres each scored 9.825. UCLA's 49.450 was its third-best beam total of the year, but Cal increased its lead to 148.675-148.150 by scoring 49.675 on floor, highlighted by eMjae Frazier's perfect 10.
UCLA finished the meet on the floor with a stellar floor score of 49.625, the Bruins' second-highest floor total of the year. UCLA's first two competitors tied their career-highs, with Lee scoring 9.9 and Andres scoring 9.925. Rosen added a 9.925, Brooklyn Moors scored 9.8, and Harris scored 9.925. Nya Reed finished the meet with a 9.95. Cal wrapped up their meet with a 49.725 on beam, the Bears' second-highest beam total ever and the second-highest beam score in the nation this season. Mya Lauzon scored the Bears' second perfect 10 of the day.
