UCLA Leaves the Yard Thrice in Win Over Tennessee
February 25, 2024 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. โ Catcher Sharlize Palacios recorded her first multi-homer game as a Bruin and the fourth of her career to help the No. 19 UCLA softball team defeat No. 5 Tennessee, 6-2, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday.
ย
The Bruins (7-5) finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, including two victories over a pair of top-25 opponents in the Lady Vols (8-4) and No. 24 Northwestern.
ย
Earning the start in the circle for UCLA was Taylor Tinsley who pitched a 7.0-inning complete game for the third day in a row. Tinsley surrendered a pair of solo home runs, but that was all the damage Tennessee would inflict against the sophomore ace. She finished the game with nine strikeouts and a win, moving her record to 3-4.
ย
Among all the pitchers competing at the 2024 Mary Nutter, Tinsley ranked first in innings pitched (22.0) and strikeouts looking (10), tied for first in strikeouts (30) and second in earned run average (0.64), opponent batting average (.242),ย earned runs allowed (2) and runs allowed (7). In her first outing of the tournament, Tinsley tossed a complete-game shutout against No. 24 Northwestern. In her second appearance against Baylor, Tinsley went the distance and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
ย
Providing run support for Tinsley was her battery mate Palacios. The redshirt senior backstop homered to straightaway center field in the bottom of the second to answer a Tennessee home run in the top half.
ย
In the bottom of the third, center fielder Janelle Meoño hit a ball that kicked up the chalk on the left field line and skirted past the incoming Tennessee left fielder. Meoño sprinted around the bases for a triple and was pushed across home plate on a ground ball by Maya Brady. One batter later, sophomore Jordan Woolery deposited a two-run blast beyond the left field wall for her second home run in as many days to stretch the Bruins' lead to 4-1.
ย
After allowing another solo shot to Tennessee's Sophia Nugent in the fourth, Tinsley settled in, striking out the side in the fifth inning. Tinsley ended her day with 71 strikes on her 100 pitches.
ย
Palacios provided an extra cushion with an opposite field solo shot to open the sixth inning, making the score 6-2.
ย
UCLA concludes its tournament portion of the schedule next week at the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif. The Bruins begin action Friday, March 1 versus Michigan and No. 14 Florida.
