The UCLA baseball team is set to conclude a busy week by hosting the 2024 Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic from Friday through Sunday. The Bruins will welcome Michigan (Friday at 5 p.m. PT) and San Diego (Saturday at 2 p.m. PT) to Jackie Robinson Stadium before meeting No. 20 UC Irvine on Sunday at 3 p.m. PT at Dodger Stadium. Michigan and San Diego will also play at Dodger Stadium, at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The games can be followed with a live video stream on Friday and Saturday, and live audio-only feeds on Friday and Sunday. - FRI โ UCLA rallied from a 3-0 deficit to make it a one-run game down the stretch, but the Bruins were ultimately edged 4-3 in the opener. UCLA had chances to tie it late, but stranded a runner at second in the seventh before seeing a leadoff walk in the eighth wiped out by a double play. Malakhi Knight paced the Bruins with a fifth-inning double, and Luke Jewett was solid over a career-long six innings (5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K).ย
- SAT โ TCU used a four-run sixth to claim a 6-3 series-clinching win in game two. AJ Salgado (2-4, double) and Dean West (2-3) both had good days with the bats for UCLA, and eight different Bruins had at least one hit.TCU never trailed in the contest, scoring single runs in the second and third before breaking it open in the sixth with a rally highlighted by a three-run Kurtis Byrne homer. ย
- SUN โ TCU finished off the sweep with a 13-3 run-rule decision in the finale. The Horned Frogs scored five in the bottom of the first and never looked back, getting into run-rule territory with another five-spot in the sixth. The game largely hinged on a momentous first-inning, as the Bruins loaded the bases with nobody out but couldn't bring a run across before TCU put together the go-ahead rally in the bottom half. Schrier went 2-3 with a homer to lead UCLA.ย
- TUE โ UCLA used a four-run seventh to log a 5-4 comeback win over Nevada on Tuesday in the team's first midweek of the year. Freshman 3B Roch Cholowsky had the biggest at-bat of the game, lining an outside pitch into the right-center field gap for a two-run double that gave UCLA its first lead of the game and capped the scoring. Two infield singles, two walks, and a wild pitch accounted for the first two runs of the go-ahead rally. Cody Schrier went 3-4 with a double to lead UCLA offensively. Landon Stump posted five solid innings his debut start, and the Bruin bullpen combined for four scoreless innings to close it out. Rashad Ruff earned his second save of the year.
- WED โ Peyton Brennan singled home Jack Holman in the bottom of the tenth to finish off a 12-11 walk-off win over Long Beach State in what is likely to be the wildest game of the season at JRS. The Bruins trailed 7-0 after three in the contest, but bounced back to tie it up at 7-7 by the fourth. LBSU would go on to re-take the lead three consecutive innings starting in the sixth, but the Bruins answered with an equal number in the bottom half of each frame. Rashad Ruff held LBSU off the board in the ninth and tenth innings to set up Brennan's game-winner. Duce Gourson was the main man behind UCLA's early-game comeback, notching four RBIs on a homer and two-run single over the third and fourth innings. The four-hour, 15-minute game featured a combined 12 errors, 13 walks, and six hit batters.ย
