Men's Basketball Loses at Washington, 94-77

February 29, 2024 | Men's Basketball

SEATTLE โ€“ Dylan Andrews totaled 21 points and a career-best 11 assists as the UCLA men's basketball team dropped a 94-77 decision at Washington in a Pac-12 contest at Alaska Airlines Arena on Thursday night.
ย
Andrews dished a career-high 11 assists and had no turnovers as UCLA (14-14, 9-8 Pac-12) lost its first game to Washington since Feb. 2, 2019, snapping a streak of nine consecutive wins against the Huskies.
ย
Washington (16-13, 8-10 Pac-12) received a team-leading 32 points from Keion Brooks Jr., who made 6 of 7 attempts from 3-point distance and was 10-for-13 at the free throw stripe. Brooks Jr. was one of four Huskies to score in double figures, along with Braxton Meah (19 points), Moses Wood (18 points) and Sahvir Wheeler (11 points, 11 assists).
ย
Lazar Stefanovic scored a season-high 22 points for UCLA, and Adem Bona finished with 16 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. Stefanovic connected on 8 of 13 shots and was 4-for-7 from 3-point distance. He registered seven rebounds and totaled two assists.
ย
Washington shot 15-for-24 from beyond the 3-point arc (62.5 percent) and finished the game having shot 55.6 percent overall (30-of-54). UCLA totaled 18 assists and committed just four turnovers in the team's first road loss since falling at Arizona, 77-71, on Saturday, Jan. 20.
ย
The host Huskies led throughout the majority of the contest on Thursday night, as the Bruins lost their third consecutive game.
ย
UCLA led Washington, 22-21, midway through the first half after Aday Mara sank a pair of free throws with 11:12 to play before halftime. Both teams continued to trade baskets, and a 3-pointer from Andrews handed the Bruins a 25-24 cushion. From that point, Washington outscored UCLA by a 20-10 margin over the final 10:30 of the opening half.
ย
The Huskies pushed their cushion to as many as 20 points, midway through the second half. Two free throws from Brooks Jr. at the 11:31 mark put Washington ahead, 66-46.
ย
UCLA closed the gap to 12 points on multiple occasions in the game's final eight minutes. A pair of free throws from Stefanovic at the 9:32 mark, followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Berke Buyuktuncel with 9:15 remaining reduced the Huskies advantage to 69-57.
ย
Washington answered by drawing fouls on consecutive sequences and sinking three of the four ensuring free throw attempts to push the lead back up to 15 points. The Bruins never pulled to any closer than 12 points through the remainder of Thursday's game.
ย
Washington led UCLA at halftime, 44-35. The Huskies shot 60.7 percent in the first half (17-for-28) and were 8-for-12 from 3-point range through the game's opening 20 minutes.
ย
The Bruins will return to action at Washington State on Saturday at 4 p.m. (PT). UCLA's game at WSU's Beasley Coliseum will be televised by the Pac-12 Network, with Ted Robinson and Eldridge Recasner calling the action.
