February 04, 2024 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES – No. 11 UCLA scored a season-high 198.075 to hand No. 18 Arizona its first loss of the season. The Bruins recorded season-highs on the uneven bars (49.425), balance beam (49.525) and floor exercise (49.750) to become the first Pac-12 team to score 198 this season. The Wildcats earned a season-best 49.450 on floor exercise and finished with a final score of 196.525.

Sophomore Selena Harris won the all-around with a career-high score of 39.775, the third-best mark in the nation this year. She also captured first place on uneven bars (9.95) and balance beam (9.975) and tied for first with graduate Nya Reed on floor exercise (9.975). Reed was the vault champion with a 9.95.
The Bruins began the meet by scoring 49.375 on vault to take a .275 lead over the Wildcats. Emily Lee and Paige Anastasi started the rotation with scores of 9.8 and 9.75, respectively, on Yurchenko full vaults before the Bruins reeled off three consecutive 9.875s from Katelyn Rosen on a Yurchenko 1.5, Chae Campbell on a stuck Yurchenko full and Harris on a Yurchenko 1.5. Reed closed the rotation with a season-high 9.95 on a nearly stuck Yurchenko 1.5 for the first event win of her UCLA career.
Moving on to uneven bars, the Bruins put up a season-high 49.425, thanks to season-high marks by Frida Esparza (9.825), Rosen (9.925), Margzetta Frazier (9.875) and Harris (9.95). UCLA also received a 9.85 from Campbell in the leadoff position, helping to extend the team's lead to 0.675, 98.800-98.125.

Rotation three got off to a great start when Lee led off with a season-high 9.925 on beam. After Rosen's 9.75, Emma Andres scored 9.775, and the Bruins closed the rotation with three consecutive 9.925+ scores. Harris nearly scored a perfect 10, recording a 9.975. Emma Malabuyo earned a 9.925, and Ciena Alipio matched that mark, tying her career-high. The Bruins' total of 49.525 made it two consecutive meets in which they scored a season-high on beam.
UCLA's floor party reached epic levels in the final rotation, as the Bruins recorded their sixth-highest floor total in school history and highest since scoring 49.775 on Mar. 6, 2022. Malabuyo led off with a season-high 9.925, followed by career-highs of 9.925 from Andres and 9.95 from Rosen. Harris and Reed finished with back-to-back 9.975s to push UCLA past 198 for the first time this year.

The Bruins will next compete at Oregon State on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8pm.
