MVB Goes Down in Four to No. 1 Beach

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team (8-3) was held to a season low .214 attack percentage in a four-set defeat at the hands of top-ranked Long Beach State (10-0) on Friday night before a sold-out crowd in Walter Pavilion. Scores of the match were 25-22, 21-25, 25-27, 19-25. The same two teams will do battle on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Ido David led UCLA with season-best 15 kills. Merrick McHenry added a season-high 11 kills to go with six blocks. Alex Knight came off the bench to add seven kills and a couple of aces. Long Beach used an opponent tying season-high 14.0 blocks to help limit the Bruin offense which totaled at least six attack errors in each of the first three sets.
UCLA opened up a 7-5 lead to begin set one after an ace from McHenry. Long Beach tied the score at 10-all and then added on the next two points to take the lead. The Bruins rallied to tie the score at 15-all after consecutive kills from David. Another David smash made it 19-17. Guy Genis' swing pushed the advantage to 20-18. A series of service errors left UCLA up 23-21. Kills by McHenry and Ethan Champlin earned the set for UCLA at 25-22.
Long Beach opened up an early 5-8 lead in set two. A Beach ace pushed the lead to four, at 7-11. A couple of kills from Genis made it 10-13, but Long Beach registered the next three points. A service run by Knight, including an ace, helped UCLA close to 18-19. David's swing tied the score at 21-all, but three Bruin miscues and a Beach block resulted in a 21-25 win for the home team.

Knight's spike put UCLA up 13-11, but the next three points went to Long Beach. Genis' kill tied the score at 18-all. A Beach error and a Knight swing put UCLA up by two. After the Beach leveled the score at 20, UCLA scored the next two on a service error and a block by Knight/McHenry/Andrew Rowan. Champlin's kill handed UCLA set point at 24-22, but a service error and a Beach block tied the score. Champlin added another kill for a 25-24 Bruin edge. The Beach had the answer with a kill, a Bruin error and an ace to capture the set at 25-27.

With the score even at 13-all, the Beach recorded three straight to go up 13-16. Another Long Beach run of three straight points expanded the gap to 15-21. David's kill ended the run and a Knight swing made it 17-22. Two straight Bruin service errors around a David kill finished off the set at 19-25.
