Women's Tennis Beats No. 8 USC 5-2

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's tennis team earned its second top-10 win of the season Friday afternoon, beating eighth-ranked USC 5-2 in a non-conference rivalry match at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Each of the Bruins' top three singles players โ Tian Fangran, Kimmi Hance and Bianca Fernandez โ was victorious against a top-60 foe. Tian clinched the overall win. Ahmani Guichard also prevailed for UCLA (5-3), completing a two-win day. The Trojans (7-4) got on the board thanks to the singles performances of Eryn Cayetano and Naomi Cheong.
Playing together for the first time, Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer took down Lily Fairclough and McKenna Koenig by a 6-2 score on Court 2 to get the Bruins off on the right foot in doubles play. With the top-court matchup still in progress, Court 3 went to a tiebreaker. There, Guichard and Sasha Vagramov outlasted the 29th-ranked pair of Parker Fry and Grace Piper for a 7-6(6) clincher. Guichard is 14-1 overall and a winner of 12 in a row on the doubles courts. Guichard and Vagramov have clinched the doubles point in each of the past two contests โ their first two appearances as a tandem.
UCLA was able to nab four first sets. Guichard did not let up in the second on Court 6, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Fairclough. The singles victory was Guichard's team-high 11th of the season. The Trojans quickly answered, though, with No. 90 Cayetano defeating Lutkemeyer 6-3, 6-4 on Court 4 and Naomi Cheong besting No. 124 Wagle 6-3, 6-2 soon after on Court 5 to tie the score.
With the focus shifted to LATC's stadium courts, No. 87 Fernandez and Tian both neared wins. First to finish was Fernandez, who held off No. 43 Piper in a first-set tiebreaker before closing out a 7-6(5), 6-2 win. Fernandez is now 5-2 versus nationally-ranked singles players and the result represented Piper's first loss in nine dual-match singles tries.
Tian sealed the deal moments later on Court 1. She broke the serve of 60th-ranked Snow Han for the final game, securing a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the process. Tian has won three matches in a row, clinching each of the past two.
Hance tacked the final point onto the Bruins' tally, winning the only three-set match of the day by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 margin against No. 24 Emma Charney on Court 2. Hance's previous best ranked win came opposite the No. 30 player in 2022.
UCLA starts Pac-12 play when it next takes the courts on Friday, March 8. The Bruins welcome Washington State to LATC for a 1:30 p.m. PT start.
