UCLA Soars in 198.550-196.825 Win over Clemson

March 16, 2024 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES – No. 11 UCLA recorded its third-highest score of all-time in a 198.550-196.825 victory over Clemson on Senior Day in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins scored three perfect 10s – two by sophomore Selena Harris, on vault and uneven bars, and one by senior Chae Campbell on floor exercise to close meet.

Harris won the all-around with a career-high 39.900, tied with Olympians Jordan Chiles and Jamie Dantzscher for the second-highest score in school history. Harris received five scores of 10.0 out of a possible eight from the judges.  Her vault 10 was her third this season and fourth of her career, and her bars 10 was the first of her career.

Campbell's floor 10 came in her first time back in the floor lineup since Jan. 27 and was the third 10 of her career and first since March 12, 2022.

UCLA got stronger and stronger as the meet went on, starting off with a 49.475 on vault before recording season-highs on bars (49.525), beam (49.675, fourth-highest score in school history) and floor (49.775, fifth-highest score in school history).

The Bruins were competing at as close to full strength as they've been all year, with Campbell back in on floor, graduate student Margzetta Frazier returning to floor for the first time this season, junior Emma Malabuyo competing on beam after missing three of the last four meets while competing in Olympic qualifying meets, and sophomore Ciena Alipio returning on beam after a three-meet absence. Frazier and Malabuyo boosted the Bruins' overall scores with 9.975s in their return.

UCLA started the meet strong with a 49.475 on vault, their second-highest score of the season. Harris' perfect 10 was the highlight of the rotation, score-wise, but freshman Paige Anastasi hitting her Yurchenko 1.5 vault for the first time for a 9.925 was a close second. The Bruins also received 9.85s from Katelyn Rosen, Campbell and Nya Reed, and a 9.825 from Emily Lee. Clemson had to count a fall on bars and scored 48.700.

A season-best 49.625 on uneven bars in rotation two helped extend UCLA's lead, even with Clemson scoring 49.450 on vault. Campbell led off on bars with a stuck double front dismount and a 9.9 score. Sophomore Maddie Anyimi followed with a career-high-tying 9.85, and Rosen hit for a 9.875. Frazier tied her career-best on bars with a 9.95, and senior Frida Esparza hit for a 9.9 before Harris scored her second consecutive 10, her first-ever on bars.

Up by nearly a point at the halfway mark, the Bruins kept elevating their performance, hitting 49.675 on beam. Lee's lead-off mark of 9.925 set the tone, and Rosen followed with a career-high 9.95. Graduate student Emma Andres added a 9.875, and Alipio hung on for a 9.750. Harris' perfect 40 bid ended on beam with a 9.95, and Malabuyo was even closer to a perfect 10, receiving a 9.975. Seniors Frida Esparza and Katie McNamara also had a chance to perform in exhibition routines, scoring 9.8 and 9.675, respectively. Clemson scored 49.375 on floor and found themselves behind the Bruins 148.775-147.525 with one rotation to go.

The famed UCLA floor party lived up to its billing and then some. After Andres' leadoff 9.9, Frazier made her long-awaited return to the floor lineup and received a perfect 10 from one judge and a 9.975 in her first and last Pauley floor routine this season. Brooklyn Moors contributed a 9.8. Harris earned a 10 from one judge and a 9.9 from the other for a 9.95 final score. Reed also scored a 9.95, setting the stage for Campbell, who closed the scoring with the Bruins' first floor 10 of the year. The floor party continued with seniors Chloe Lashbrooke and Frida Esparza performing exhibitions, with Lashbrooke scoring 9.85 and Esparza, who has performed on floor just one other time in January of 2022, scored 9.825.

"I was really proud of how senior meet went today," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "The team has really come together over the past week. Last week was a little disappointing, so we really came together this week to focus on the things that are going to help us be successful, and I felt from start to finish, the team did absolutely that. They were in it together, they were dialed in, and the energy was through the roof. I couldn't be more proud of where we're at and excited about where we're going to finish this season."

The Bruins will compete for their 20th Pac-12 Championship title next Saturday, March 23 in West Valley City, Utah.
