LOS ANGELES -- Top-ranked UCLA (18-0, 3-0 MPSF) never trailed and outscored the Spartans 11-4 to close the game to post a 16-8 win over No. 17 San Jose State in an MPSF contest on Sunday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. With the win, UCLA improved to 43-0 all-time against the Spartans.

Sophomore Taylor Smith had her third hat trick of the year while freshman Olivia Ouellette tied her season- and career-high of two goals for the third time this season.

Freshman Lauren Steele got the start in the cage and played all but the final 5:14 of the game, tallying 11 saves, three steals, two assists, and one goal, while allowing six goals. Sophomore Izzy Rosensitto played the final 5:14 of the fourth quarter and allowed two goals.

The Bruins never trailed in the contest, scoring the first goal of the game on a penalty shot by Szegedi (1Q - 6:12). San Jose State tied the game at 1-1, but the Bruins scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead and the game was never tied again. UCLA led 4-2 at the end of the first period. The Spartans pulled to within one goal at 5-4 (2Q - 3:04). The Bruins led 6-4 at the break, but then dominated the third period, 6-1, to put the game out of reach, leading 12-5 heading into the final stanza. UCLA won a close battle in the fourth period, 4-3, to provide the 16-8 final.

Emma Ruzic and Lucy Miszewski each scored twice to lead San Jose State (9-9, 0-2 MPSF).
