Women's Basketball Rallies to Beat Creighton, Reach Sweet Sixteen
March 25, 2024 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 seed UCLA women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat seventh-seeded Creighton 67-63 in NCAA Tournament second-round play Monday in front of 7,839 at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Kiki Rice of the Bruins (27-6) scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half. Lauren Betts notched her 12th double-double of the season, totaling 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gabriela Jaquez pulled down a season-high 11 boards to lead all players. UCLA out-rebounded the Bluejays by a 40-22 margin, including 12-4 on the offensive glass.
Lauren Jensen led Creighton (26-6) with 20 points. Morgan Maly added 18 and Emma Ronsiek contributed 14. The Bluejays scored just 21 second-half points after posting 42 in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bruins went to Betts early and often in the sophomore's return to the lineup. She scored her team's initial six points and made six of nine first-quarter shots from the field for 12 points. The Bluejays' answer came in the form of Jensen, who scored 11 points of her own. She knocked down both of her attempts from 3-point range and Creighton made three of four en route to a 20-19 advantage on the scoreboard.
The Bluejays went on an 8-0 run to start the second and saw their lead reach double figures when Ronsiek drained a 3-pointer with 6:27 to go (31-21). Ronsiek scored 10 of her 12 first-half points in the quarter to support Jensen's game-high 17. A Camryn Brown layup in the final seconds trimmed UCLA's deficit back to single digits, as Creighton took a 42-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A Betts layup with 7:05 left in the third started a 6-0 Bruin run that turned into a 15-4 outburst and 52-50 lead for the Bruins, their first since the 1:36 mark of the first quarter. Rice was the catalyst, scoring nine points during the stretch and completing the spree with a coast-to-coast layup in traffic. She scored 13 points in the quarter. UCLA twice saw its lead reach three in the closing moments of the third, but Jensen's triple with 27 seconds remaining sent the game into its last 10 minutes tied at 56.
The Bruins picked up where they left off to begin the final frame, scoring the first seven points and nine of 11 for a 65-58 advantage with 5:02 left. A Molly Mogensen 3-pointer brought the Bluejays back to within two points at 2:01 (65-63), but Charisma Osborne's jumper on UCLA's next trip down the court again made it a two-possession game and capped scoring for the night.
