Last Year Against the Wildcatsย ย  ย
UCLA recorded a home sweep of Arizona last year from Mar.17-19, 2023:
  • Game 1 โ€” UCLA recorded a 5-1 in Friday's series opener against Arizona. The Wildcats got a leadoff homer in the first, but UCLA responded with a four-spot in the bottom half and held the visitors off the board the rest of the way. Junior third baseman Kyle Karros had a pair of doubles to lead the Bruins offensively, including an RBI two-bagger to tie it up in the first. UCLA made several key defensive plays, none more important than a bases-loaded unassisted double play by second baseman Duce Gourson on a soft liner in the seventh. Jake Brooks picked up the win, limiting Arizona to two hits and no runs after the leadoff homer. Cody Delvecchio was UCLA's top performer out of the pen, facing the minimum over 1 2/3 innings.ย
  • Game 2 โ€” The Bruins clinched the series with a 7-5 Saturday win. UCLA used a six-run fifth inning to erase an early deficit and take the lead for good, sending 11 batters to plate during the rally. Carson Yates had the biggest swing of the inning, a go-ahead three run homer to left field. JonJon Vaughns and Darius Perry added RBI singles, and Vaughns later hit a solo home run. UCLA's bullpen combined for 6 2/3 innings with just one earned run against.ย
  • Game 3 โ€” UCLA finished off the sweep with a 6-4 Sunday win. The Bruins scored in each of their final five offensive innings to take control of the game. Cody Schrier (3-4, two doubles) and Jack Holman (3-4, two runs) led UCLA offensively while Kelly Austin pitched into the sixth inning while allowing just one earned run. Bruin relievers had to make some big pitches in the late innings. Jake Saum inherited a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and came up with back-to-back Ks against Arizona's three and four-hole hitters to escape undamaged, and Cody Delvecchio pitched out of a two-on jam in the eighth.
  • For the series, UCLA outscored Arizona 18-10, out-hit them .260 to .239, and had a 2.67 to 6.38 advantage in team ERA. The Wildcats left 31 runners on base over the weekend, hitting the double-digit mark in each game (10-10-11).
Current Bruins Against Arizonaย ย  ย
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against Arizona include: Cody Delvecchio (3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K in 3 GP), Jack Holman (5-9, 3 R, RBI, .615 OBP in 3 GP), and Malakhi Knight (5 RBI in 5 GP).ย

The All-Time Series Against Arizonaย ย  ย
UCLA owns a 140-125-2 record against Arizona all-time, including a 33-22 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have won four of the last five head-to-head sets between the two schools, including the last matchup in Tucson (UCLA took two of three from then-No. 9 Arizona from March 25-27, 2022).

The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA is 3-1 over the last week, taking two of three at home over the weekend against USC, and outlasting UCSB in a wild midweek matchup:
  • FRI โ€” The Bruins absorbed a 15-2 loss in the series opener. The game was close in the early and middle innings, but USC pulled away with a three-run fifth before breaking it open with a seven-spot in the sixth. Duce Gourson had three hits, including two doubles, for UCLA. Owen Egan made his collegiate debut, allowing one hit and striking out three over 1 2/3 innings of work.
  • SAT โ€” UCLA evened the series with a 7-6 win in game two. UCLA never trailed in the contest despite the close final scoreline, as the Bruins built a 5-0 lead through three before holding the Trojans at bay just enough down the stretch. The 3-4-5 spots in the UCLA order combined to go 7-13 with four runs scored and thre RBIs. Freshman third baseman Roch Cholowsky led the way with a 3-5 day including a double off the right-field wall that was inches away from his first-career home run. Junior second baseman Duce Gourson went 2-4 with a home run, and freshman first baseman Mulivai Levu added two hits, including a two-run single that proved decisive. JonJon Vaughns also had a huge two-way game, notching a pair of singles and making a crucial diving catch to end the third inning and preserve a 2-0 lead at the time. Michael Barnett was rock solid in a 5 1/3-inning start, holding the Trojans off the scoreboard in each of his first five frames en route to a Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nomination.ย
  • SUN โ€” The Bruins clinched the series with a 6-3 rubber match win. USC opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second, but UCLA responded to go ahead for good with back-to-back three-spots starting in the third. Redshirt junior right fielder AJ Salgado (2-4, two RBIs) and junior shortstop Cody Schrier (2-4) each had multi-hit days to pace the Bruins offensively, while freshman first baseman Mulivai Levu added a clutch two-run single in the third inning. Junior center fielder Malakhi Knight had the biggest single swing of the game, popping a two-run homer to center in the fourth inning that ultimately served as the game-winning hit. The Bruins used four pitchers in the contest, with none surrendering more than one run. Freshman third baseman Roch Cholowsky was a standout on the defensive end, making a trio of highlight-reel defensive plays at the hot corner.
  • TUE โ€” Payton Brennan had seven hits in as many at-bats, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th, to lead UCLA past UCSB 13-12 in 12 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Brennan, who had five singles and a double to go along with his first-career home run, became the first Bruin since 2008 to notch seven hits in a game. The four-hour, 44-minute contest saw the teams combine for 41 hits, 31 runners left on base, 14 pitchers used, 485 pitches thrown, six ties, and four lead changes. The Bruins trailed four separate times over the course of the game, including in do-or-die scenarios in the ninth and 11th innings, but battled back to tie it each time before Brennan's walk-off heroics in the 12th. JonJon Vaughns also had a noteworthy day, scoring the game-winning run on the walk-off and also recording the win as the pitcher of record (he contributed two innings of one-run relief).
Friendly Confinesย ย  ย
The Bruins are off to a strong start in home games so far this season, going 10-4 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA is outscoring its opponents 92-87 at home and holds sizable advantages in batting (.282-.253), OBP (.413-.354), slugging (.421-.373), and ERA (4.98-6.55).The Bruins went 19-9-1 at JRS a season ago, including a 13-game home winning streak to open the campaign. UCLA had a plus-63 run differential (207-144) in home games last year.ย

Brennan Has Historic Night vs. UCSB on March 26ย ย  ย
Payton Brennan had a night to remember on March 26, leading UCLA past UCSB in extras with a 7-for-7 performance:
  • He became the first Bruin with seven hits in a game since Casey Haerther did so at Arizona on March 29, 2008
  • He hit first first-career home run to give UCLA a 10-8 lead in the seventh
  • His final knock was a walk-off single up the middle with runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the 12th
  • He entered the game with six hits and a .194 batting average, he finished at 13 hits and a .342 hitting clip
Dynamic Late-Inning Duoย ย  ย
UCLA's setup-closer combo of sophomore Cody Delvecchio and graduate Rashad Ruff has been a standout of the pitching staff so far this season:
  • Delvecchio leads the Pac-12 (and ranks second nationally) with 15 appearances and has pitched to a 2.19 ERA over 24 2/3 innings. He's unscored upon in four of his last five outings, and has allowed an earned run in just four of his 15 appearances.
  • Ruff has recorded five saves on the year, tied for seventh nationally and just two behind Duke's Charlie Bellenson for the NCAA lead. He's number two in the Pac at 14 appearances, and has struck out 27 batters in just 17 1/3 innings for a team-best 14.0 K/9 ratio (among pitchers with 2+ IP on the year).
