March 05, 2024 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Three Bruins earn nods in the Pac-12 Conference end of season awards, as released by the Conference office Tuesday.
Sophomores Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice join graduate student Charisma Osborne on the All-Pac-12 Team; The sophomore duo earn their first all-Conference team recognitions while the graduate shooting guard captures her fourth All-Pac-12 selection. Rice was named to the 2022-23 All-Freshman Team; Betts was an honorable mention in the newcomer category last year.
Betts and Osborne also capture two of the five Pac-12 All-Defensive Team spots.
UCLA last had three all-Conference honorees in the 2012-13 season when now-assistant coach Atonye Nyingifa, Markel Walker, Alyssia Brewer were all selected to the All-Pac-12 Team (Coaches). Jordin Canada and Monique Billings both made all-Conference defensive teams together in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 campaigns.
Lauren Betts – All-Pac-12, All-Defensive
The sophomore center has been named to the All-Pac-12 and All-Defensive teams in her first season with the Bruins. Betts is the only newcomer on the list of five all-defense honorees.
Betts ranked second in the NCAA in field goal percentage (.667 FG%) during the regular season; she scores a team-high 14.9 points per game and leads the Bruins on the boards, snatching 8.7 rebounds per contest. The center has proven to be a defensive anchor both in the stat sheet and on the floor; Betts swats 2.2 shots per game while also providing perimeter defense with her ever-improving lateral quickness and length. The Centennial, Colo., native recorded 10 double-doubles in 25 appearances this season; she nearly doubled her output in every statistical category from her freshman to sophomore year in eight fewer games played. Betts set new single-game highs in points (24), rebounds (18), assists (4), blocks (6) and field-goals made (11) during the 2023-24 campaign with the Bruins.
Charisma Osborne – All-Pac-12 (4x), All-Defensive (2x)
Osborne earns the fourth-consecutive All-Pac-12, second All-Defensive honors of her decorated collegiate career.
In her final campaign with the Bruins, Osborne has improved her efficiency on the offensive end while locking down opposing backcourts during the 2023-24 season. The shooting guard has recorded career-best shooting percentages in FG (.416), 3FG (.326) and FT (.889) while leading UCLA in points scored (409) and steals (48). Osborne has recorded three double-doubles this season, averaging 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game during her fifth season at UCLA. The graduate guard has had 40 or more steals in four out of her five campaigns.
Kiki Rice – All-Pac-12
UCLA's point guard built off a strong freshman year to propel her into the primary ballhandler position for the Bruins, earning Rice her first All-Pac-12 selection.
Rice plays the second-most minutes per game, only trailing Osborne in time seen on the floor. In those minutes, Rice has totaled 12.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. She leads the Bruins in defensive rebounding, with 148 defensive boards (5.1 DREB/G) to her name this season. Her 24-point, 11-rebound double-double helped propel UCLA past then-No. 6 UConn early in the year, marking UCLA's first of its NCAA-leading seven wins over Associated Press Top 25 women's basketball teams before postseason begins. The point guard also recorded the 10th triple-double in UCLA program history (14 PTS, 10 REB, 10 AST) against CSUN on Dec. 7, flirting with a quadruple double (7 STL) in the effort. Rice has started all 29 appearances this year, averaging 30.6 minutes per contest. The Bethesda, Md., native has improved all her shooting splits (.450/.316/.845) since her freshman campaign, adding a long-range threat to her game as a sophomore.
