No. 1 UCLA Dominates on Day Two of Battle for LA

LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA (8-3) claimed another pair of dual victories to go 4-0 at the Battle for Los Angeles on Saturday, March 2, on a rainy day at Mapes Beach.

Taking two more victories on day two, the Bruins notched a 5-0 sweep over No. 13 Washington (3-4) and a 4-1 victory over No. 9 Long Beach State (3-2). UCLA improved to 13-0 all-time against the Huskies,ย while improving to 11-4 all-time against the Beach, with its 11th-straight win in the series over LBSU.
To begin the morning dual against the Huskies, redshirt freshman Kenzie Brower and senior Jessie Smith put the Bruins on the board first with a win on court four over Kendall Mather and Brooke Balue, 23-21, 21-19.ย

UCLA went up 2-0 after senior Peri Brennan and graduate student Devon Newberry defeated Zoey Henson and Lauren Wilcock on court two, 20-22, 21-17, 15-10.ย

Junior Natalie Myszkowski and redshirt freshman Ensley Alden were able to clinch the dual with a straight-set win over Natalie Martin and Kierstyn Barton, 21-13, 21-15.ย

On court three, senior Tessa Van Winkle and junior Sophie Moore put the Bruins up 4-0 after defeating Scarlett Dahl and Josie Ulrich, 21-18, 21-15.ย

To complete the 5-0 sweep, sophomore Maggie Boyd and graduate student Lexy Denaburgย posted a winย over Piper Monk-Heidrichย (former Bruin) and Magdalena Rabitsch, 21-14, 16-21, 15-11.ย

In exhibition play, junior Reagan Hope and graduate student Rileigh Powers split a pair of sets with Sarah Wilcock and Audra Wilmes, 18-21, 21-12.

To start the afternoon dual against the Beach, Brennan and Newberry took the victory over Savannah Standage and Julia Westby, 25-23, 21-19 to give UCLA a 1-0 lead.ย

Long Beach State put a point on the board with Megan Widener and Christine Deroos defeating Brower and Smith, 21-16, 15-21, 15-11ย to make it 1-1.ย

Van Winkle and graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh secured a win over Natalie Glenn and Mo Gibson in three sets, 17-21, 22-20, 15-12, to provide the 4-1 final over the Beach.

In exhibition play, redshirt freshman Ky Vaickus and Moore split the dual with Kate Stoughton and Emily Sparks, 21-13, 24-26. This marked the first time Vaickus has seen action in her career.ย
