March 07, 2024 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS — The UCLA Women's Basketball team defeated the Utah Utes in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, 67-57. Angela Dugalić and Charisma Osborne finished in double figures to lead the Bruins to the win.
Dugalić led all scorers with a career-high 17 points on the night, while Osborne finished with 16 points, and Kiki Rice added another 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Bruins in the win. Alissa Pili led the way for Utah with 16 points.
UCLA (25-5, 13-5 Pac-12) and Utah (22-10, 11-7 Pac-12) struggled from the floor in the opening quarter as both teams shot a combined 11-for-28 from the field in the first quarter. However, UCLA hit three big shots towards the end of the quarter to get in rhythm, as Lauren Betts hit a layup down low, while Gabriela Jaquez and Dugalić nailed back-to-back threes to put the Bruins up four, 14-10. Utah hit a jumper late in the quarter to make it a 14-12 UCLA lead at the end of the first period of play.
The Bruins used a 7-0 run at the midway point of the second quarter to establish a seven-point lead, 23-16. Osborne hit a mid-range jumper, and Londynn Jones nailed a deep three from the wing to give the Bruins a 21-16 lead before Kiki Rice added a layup in transition to extend the lead to seven, 23-16, with 6:32 to go in the second quarter.
Osborne continued to light it up from mid-range, sinking two more in succession, giving the Bruins a 29-24 advantage with 2:23 to go in the first half. Osborne finished the half 6-for-9 from the field with 12 points to lead all scorers at the break.
With 46 seconds remaining in the opening half, Utah's Ines Vieira hit a step-back triple to cut the Bruins' lead to two, 29-27. Rice then responded with a three of her own, giving UCLA a 32-27 halftime lead.
Dugalić cashed in from bonus distance to score the first basket for either team in the second half, and gave UCLA a 35-27 cushion with 7:24 remaining in the quarter.
Jones and Vieira continued the theme and hit threes on back-to-back possessions as the two squads traded baskets for the remainder of the third quarter. Dugalić led the Bruins with seven points in the quarter, as UCLA took a 49-41 advantage into the final 10 minutes of action.
Rice hit a huge triple for the Bruins with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest to get things going in the fourth quarter. The sophomore from Bethesda, Maryland, hit a deep three from the top of the arc, extending the Bruins cushion to 10 points, 54-44. Dugalić tacked on another deep three from the wing to give UCLA a then game-high 13-point lead, 57-44, with 6:48 remaining in the game.
The Utes closed the gap to eight, 57-49, before Betts went to work down low. The sophomore caught the ball in the low block before finishing at the rim to put the Bruins back up by 10, 59-49, with 3:36 to go in the game. Rice re-established the Bruins' 13-point advantage when she finished through contact at the rim and converted the free throw to complete the and-one opportunity, and the Bruins led 62-49 with three minutes remaining on the clock.
UCLA managed the game from there and earned a hard-fought 67-57 win in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 tournament.
