No. 1 UCLA Splits a Pair of Top 10 Duals

TEMPE, Ariz.ย -- No. 1 UCLA (9-4)ย split a pair of top 10 duals on Friday at the Pac-12 South Invitational sweeping No. 10 Arizona State (6-1), 5-0, and then falling to No. 2 Stanford (8-1)ย for the second time this season, 3-2, at the Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility.ย The Bruins improved to 10-1 all-time against Arizona State and fell to 21-3 against the Cardinal.
This marked the 23rd time in program history that the Bruins were involved in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchย and UCLA fell to 9-14 all-time in those duals. UCLA is just 2-9 when it is the No. 1 team in a 1v2 situationย and 7-5 when it is the No. 2 team.
In the dual against the Sun Devils, UCLA'sย court five pair ofย junior Natalie Myszkowski and redshirt freshman Ensley Alden took down Kendall Whitmarsh (Jaden Whitmarsh's younger sister) and Adri Nieves Papaleo in straight sets, 21-12, 21-16. The young Bruin duo are now 11-1 on the year as they also picked up a win against No. 2 Stanford's pair of Maya Harvey and Clara Stowell, 21-11, 21-19.
In the dual against the Cardinal, the Bruins lost the first two matches in the first wave (court two and four), both were two-point games in the third set. But after the Bruins' put a point on the board on court five, the clinching point for the Cardinal came at court one where UCLA's pair of graduate student Lexy Denaburg and sophomore Maggie Boyd fell in straight sets to Stanford'sย Xolani Hodel and Brooke Rockwell, 21-17, 21-16.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they take on Oregon (1-7) at 9:00 a.m. PST and then UCLA concludes the tournament with a rematch against No. 14 Washington (3-5).
