UCLA Falls to USC in Double Overtime in Pac-12 Semifinals, 80-70

March 08, 2024 | Women's Basketball

LAS VEGAS — The UCLA Women's Basketball team fell in double overtime to the USC Trojans in the semifinal round of the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, 80-70. Four Bruins finished in double figures on Friday night.

Charisma Osborne led the Bruins with 21 points on the night, while Lauren Betts added 17 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Other Bruins in double figures included Kiki Rice with 11 points and Angela Dugalić with 10 points. JuJu Watkins led the Trojans with 33 points and 10 rebounds.

With 1:36 remaining in regulation Dugalić hit a deep three to tie the game at 59-59. The junior was found by Osborne, who tossed the ball across the key to Dugalić who buried the shot to tie the game.

After the Bruins (25-6, 13-5 Pac-12) could not convert on the offensive end, the Trojans (25-5, 13-5 Pac-12) got the ball back with 19 seconds left in regulation. Watkins dribbled the ball near midcourt before taking it into the key, where she lost control, and Betts stripped the ball. With two seconds left and the score tied at 59-59, the Bruins could not convert, and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Bruins worked the ball down low to Betts, who put the Bruins up 65-61 with 2:04 left in overtime. However, USC clawed their way back and tied it at 67-67 with 50 seconds remaining. After that, neither team could get a shot to fall in the remaining seconds, and the game went to a second overtime.

USC took a 74-68 lead with 1:10 to go in the second overtime period before Betts, who finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds in the game, made a crucial basket for the Bruins, cutting the deficit to four, 74-70. However, USC made their free throws down the stretch to earn the 80-70 win.

Earlier on in the evening, USC came out strongly, sinking eight of their opening 13 shots in the first quarter, taking a 21-8 lead with just under a minute remaining in the quarter. The Trojans would tack on another three to end the quarter with a 24-8 lead. On the other side of the ball, the Bruins struggled from the field, shooting 4-for-14 in the opening frame.

The Bruins came out firing in the second quarter and used a 16-0 run to tie the game with 4:33 to go in the half. Christeen Iwuala finished down low off a pass from Rice to cut the lead to single digits, 26-17. Osborne continued the run with two clutch 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, making it a 26-23 game with 4:57 remaining in the first half.

Rice continued her strong outing and tied the game at 26-26 after finishing at the rim through contact and drawing a foul. She then converted the free throw and tied the game up, as the Bruins made it a 16-0 run.

USC responded with a small run of their own, sinking two 3-pointers in the final 1:30 to take a six-point lead, 37-31, into the halftime break. Osborne led the Bruins with 10 points in the half, while Betts added another six points and eight rebounds.

Both defenses made easy looks hard to come by in the third quarter, as the teams combined for just 17 points in the opening seven minutes of the quarter before Gabriela Jaquez hit a clutch three from the wing to bring the Bruins within three, 44-41 with 4:07 remaining in the third.

The Bruins and Trojans both continued to struggle from the field as both defenses played stifled their opponent for the remainder of the quarter, and the Trojans took a 48-45 lead into the final period of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Bruins made two quick baskets to take a 49-48 lead courtesy of Londynn Jones and Osborne. The lead would change hands multiple times over the next few minutes, before Dugalic hit another three for the Bruins, giving UCLA a 54-51 lead. USC's Watkins responded with jumpers on two possessions in a row for the Trojans, and the USC led 55-54 with 6:26 to go. The teams would battle over the next six minutes but remained tied at the end of regulation and overtime before USC pulled away in double overtime to earn the win.
