Softball Makes Statement with Sweep of No. 5 Stanford
April 21, 2024 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. โ A two-run homer by Jordan Woolery in the seventh inning lifted the No. 12 UCLA softball team to a 2-0 victory and sweep of No. 5 Stanford at Smith Family Stadium on Sunday.
ย
The Bruins (27-9, 12-3 Pac-12) are now in first place in the conference standings and a .5 game up on the Cardinal (36-10, 13-5 Pac-12). Sophomore pitcher Taylor Tinsley won all three games in the series, pitching a total of 15.2 scoreless innings with 20 strikeouts and just one walk. Tinsley retired all eight batters she faced in Sunday's nationally-televised series finale.
ย
Stanford starting pitcher NiJaree Canady, the Pac-12 leader in ERA, strikeouts and victories, was handed her second loss of the weekend.
ย
Megan Grant doubled in all three games and went 5-for-10 at the plate with two runs scored in the series.
ย
Kaitlyn Terry started game three in the circle after surrendering a season-high nine hits in her start in game two on Saturday. The freshman southpaw bounced back in a big way with seven strikeouts in 4.1 scoreless innings.
ย
Terry's outing was highlighted by a three-up, three-down second inning and three strikeouts in the third. She found trouble in the bottom half of the fifth, giving up a single and walk to put runners on first and second. The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez turned to Tinsley out of the bullpen to take over with runners in scoring position for the second day in a row.
ย
Once again, Tinsley escaped the jam with a groundout to first base and fly out to center field on just four pitches to keep the game scoreless.
ย
The Bruins broke through the Cardinal ace in the top of the seventh. Grant, after falling into an 0-2 count to start the at-bat, walked on six pitches to put a runner on base for Woolery. Woolery, a Bay Area native from Walnut Creek, homered to the deepest part of the ballpark to give UCLA the 2-0 lead it would hold for the rest of the game.
ย
UCLA is on the road for a midweek game Tuesday, April 23 at Long Beach State. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. (PT).
