Softball Defeats Cal State Fullerton, 8-0, Tuesday Night

April 09, 2024 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 12 UCLA softball team homered twice in an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Cal State Fullerton at Easton Stadium Tuesday evening.
ย
The Bruins (23-9, 8-3 Pac-12) finished with twelve hits in the contest, including a 3-for-4 performance from shortstop Maya Brady. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Terry notched her fifth shutout of the season and improved her undefeated record to 11-0. Terry struck out eight of the 25 Titans (24-14, 10-2 Big West) she faced and limited Cal State Fullerton to five hits.
ย
Sophomore Jordan Woolery put the Bruins on the board in the first inning with two-run, opposite-field home run. The blast, Woolery's fifth of the season, scored Brady who singled up the middle earlier in the inning. Brady, in her next at-bat the very next inning, hit UCLA's second two-run big fly of the game. Brady's wall-scraper home run inched past the left field wall for her team-leading 10th of the year.
ย
Terry did not let a single Cal State Fullerton batter reach third base, and only twice did she let two Titans reach base in the same inning. The southpaw's eight strikeouts are her second most in a single game this season.
ย
Brady notched her third hit of the game with a comebacker to the pitcher in the fifth inning. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native now leads the Bruins with 14 multi-hit games and two three-hit games in 2024.
ย
UCLA rallied for four runs on four hits and one error to secure the mercy-rule walk-off in the sixth. A base hit into left field by Megan Grant and a walk to Taylor Stephens sparked the rally. Pinch hitter Ramsey Suarez drove in the first run of the inning on a single into right field. The throw home by Cal State Fullerton's right fielder was booted by catcher Alexia Lopez, who had Grant out at home by eight feet if she held onto the ball. Instead, the ball trickled to the backstop allowing for two runs to score and stretch the Bruins' lead to 6-0.
ย
Suarez is now 3-for-3 with three runs batted in across her last three pinch-hitting opportunities at Easton Stadium.
ย
The pinch-hitting heroics continued with Savannah Pola. Pola hit a high chopper up the middle to score another Seneca Curo, who re-entered for Suarez to pinch run at second base.
ย
A pinch-hit single by Addison Mettler โ€“ her first hit since Feb. 16 versus Georgia in Clearwater, Fla. โ€“ brought Brady up the plate. Brady rolled a productive groundout to second base to move the mercy-rule run to third base, sixty feet away from home. Allchin got the job done with a sacrifice fly to right field.
ย
UCLA is be back in action at Easton Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against California. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. (PT).
