Women's Golf Opens Play at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The UCLA women's golf team finished tied for 15th (+3, 291) after round one of the NCAA Championships at La Costa Champions Course at Omni Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, on Friday.
The Bruins concluded the first day 11 strokes shy of Clemson (-8, 280) in first place and two strokes behind LSU, which is in 14th (+1, 289) after the opening day.
Lottie Woad of Florida State had the low round of the day at 7-under, while the Bruins' Caroline Canales finished tied for eighth at 3-under after the first day of play.
Canales finished the day with birdies on holes one, six, and 18, and also finished tied with four others for the most pars on Friday with 15.
Three Bruins posted two-over 72s on day one of the NCAA Championships. Zoe Antoinette Campos, Kate Villegas and Natalie Vo all finished +2 to round of the scoring quartet for UCLA. Campos had an eventful day for UCLA, birding four holes, while bogeying six others.
Vo, who was +4 on the front nine, made three birdies and one bogey on the back nine. She made two crucial birdie puts for the Bruins on both holes 17 and 18 to finish -2 on the back nine.
Villegas carded the third 72 of the day for UCLA to wrap up the scoring for the Bruins. She shot even par on the front nine before shooting two-over on the back nine to finish her round.
The final Bruin in action on Friday was Meghan Royal. Royal opened her round strongly, converting an eagle on the par-five second hole to put herself at -2 before eventually finishing the day +3, and tied for 87th overall.
About the NCAA Championships:
Thirty teams and six individuals take the course for three rounds of stroke play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The field will be cut to 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team after Sunday's round, with the final round of stroke play taking place Monday. The individual national champion will be crowned on Monday and the top eight teams will advance to match play competition.
The quarterfinals and semifinals of match play will be on Tuesday, May 21. The NCAA title match will be played Wednesday, May 22 to determine the team champion.
