
Three Swim and Dive Bruins to Compete at Paris Olympics

PARIS, France โ Three athletes are set to represent the UCLA swimming and diving program at the 2024 Paris Olympics beginning Friday. Tom Daley, an assistant diving coach will compete in the 10-meter synchronized diving competition, current student-athlete Gizem Guvenc will represent Turkiye in the 4x200m freestyle relay, and incoming graduate transfer Emma Harvey will represent Bermuda in the 100m backstroke.
Tom Daley, a four-time Olympic medalist joined the UCLA Swimming and Diving program in September of 2023 as an assistant diving coach. The Plymouth, England native will be heading to his fifth Olympic games this summer for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Daley, the youngest-ever European diving champion, has represented Great Britain at the Olympics in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.ย ย He owns four Olympic medals, including a gold medal, which he won with partner Matty Lee in the 10-meter synchronized diving competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also earned the bronze medal in the 10-meter platform individual competition at the Tokyo Olympics. ย
Daley has won a combined total of 11 World, Commonwealth and European Championship gold medals, firmly establishing himself among the best in the world. Previously, Daley won bronze at London 2012 in the individual discipline before adding another in the synchro with Dan Goodfellow at Rio 2016.
Since announcing his return to the platform in April 2023, Daley has been training on UCLA's campus and providing valuable insight as an assistant diving coach to UCLA's current crop of divers.
Under current UCLA diving head coach Tom Stebbins' tutelage this past season, Daley has earned multiple first-place finishes with partner Noah Williams as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic games. The duo won both the men's synchronized 10-meter competition at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup in March and finished in second place at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, back in February. The duo then followed that with a silver medal at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup 2024 โ Super Final held in China in April.
Gizem Guvenc, a CSCAA All-American, is headed to her first Olympics. During the 2023-24 season, she appeared in all 12 regular-season meets and the Pac-12 Championships. Guvenc picked up five individual wins throughout the season in the 100, 200, and 500 free. She set a season-best time in the 100 free at the Pac-12 Championships (49.46) and another season-best time in the 200 free in the dual meet against USC (1:46.04).
During her sophomore season Guvenc earned CSCAA All-America honors in the 800 free relay after helping UCLA to a 15th place finish at the 2023 NCAA Championships. Split 1:45.79 on that relay, just 0.02 seconds behind Katrina Bellio for the fastest on the team. ย She also competed at the Pac-12 Championships, making the B Final in the 200 free. Guvenc made her NCAA debut at the UCSD dual meet on Jan. 7, winning the 200 free (1:50.51) and scoring in the 100 free.
Emma Harvey is heading to her first Olympic games in Paris in 2024. The incoming graduate transfer student from fellow Big Ten school Penn State owns the third-fastest 100 Fly (53.76), the eight-fastest 50 Free (22.58) and the seventh-fastest 100 Back (53.08) in Penn State program history. She was a CSCAA Scholar All-American Second Team honoree in 2022 and excelled in the classroom as well earning Academic All-B1G honors in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Internationally, Harvey qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games representing Bermuda. She is the national champion in both the 100 backstroke and 100m butterfly, and also holds the national record in both the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
