Women's Soccer
Jessie Fleming (2016-19) assisted on the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to help lead Canada to a 2-1 comeback victory over New Zealand in the opening game of the Olympic tournament. Fleming, Canada's team captain, sent a perfect through ball from beyond midfield, finding Evelyne Viens in the box. Viens one-timed the pass into the back of the net to break the 1-1 tie. New Zealand had scored the opening goal of the game in the 13th minute, but the Canadians evened it up in extra time just before halftime on a goal by Cloe Lacasse. Canada earns three points to take an early lead in Group A.
In group B action, Australia lost 3-0 to Germany. Teagan Micah (2016-19) did not play for the Matildas. Mallory Swanson (2017) scored two goals in a minute for the U.S. in a 3-0 win over Zambia. Swanson's goals came in the 24th and 25th minute and were her second and third career Olympic goals and first since the 2016 Olympics.
All three teams will be back in action on Sunday, July 28. Australia will play Zambia on Sunday at 10am PT, Canada plays France at 12pm PT, and the U.S. faces Germany at 12pm PT.
Men's Rugby Sevens
Lucas Lacamp (2020-23) and Team USA advanced to the quarterfinals of Men's Rugby Sevens after going 1-1-1 in pool play and finishing as the top-ranked third-place team thanks to tiebreakers. Team USA bowed out in the quarterfinal round, however, falling to Pool B winners Australia, 18-0. Lacamp was pivotal in a tourney-opening draw with France on July 24, as well a 33-17 win over Uruguay on July 25, which ensured passage to the knockout round for Team USA.
Against France, Lacamp scored one try to finish with a co-team-high five points in a 12-12 result. While he was kept off the scoresheet in a loss to Fiji on July 24, he bounced back to score another try in the decisive win over Uruguay on July 25.
Team USA will conclude competition on July 27, facing Ireland at 6am PT. The final placing game will take place at either 9 or 9:30am PT.
