USA Women's Volleyball Claims Silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics

The U.S. Men's Olympic Team won their first medal since 2008, claiming Bronze in a thrilling shootout win over Hungary 11-8. Down two in the fourth quarter, the United States battled back to for a tie in regulation, sending the match to a shootout. In the shootout the United States dominated. Hannes Daube, UCLA's Max Irving, and Alex Bowen all hit their shots to start for Team USA. Meanwhile, Hungary went off the bar in two of their shots and saw Adrian Weinberg block a third, part of a massive day for him that witnessed the Olympic rookie pile up 16 saves. The win marks the fourth bronze medal in program history, joining 1924 (Paris), 1932 and 1972.

Team USA held a 1-0 lead after a power play goal, but Hungary answered moments later on a power play of their own for a 1-1 match. With 4:32 left, the Bruins' Chase Dodd got free inside and had his shot blocked, he battled for the ball and was able to bury a second chance try for a 2-1 lead. Hungary tied the match with :36 left in the period but the United States had the final word, snagging a pass to the post and hammering the ball for a 3-2 lead after one. Both offenses were quiet in the first half of the second quarter until the USA drilled a power play goal for a 4-2 lead with 4:41 left. Hungary got one back a few minutes later and it was a 4-3 match going into halftime.

Hungary made a surge in the third quarter, tying the game in the opening 30 seconds and then going in front at 5-4 with 5:02 to play in the period. Team USA answered right back with back-to-back goals, the second of which was from UCLA's Irving and it was quickly a 6-5 lead for the United States with 2:45 to play in the third. That would also be the margin as play moved to the fourth quarter.

Hungary made one final push in the fourth quarter as they took control scoring three straight goals in the opening 5:38 to tie the match and then go ahead 8-6. Once again, Team USA showed their resolve and began to chip away. The Americans would score two in a row for an 8-8 match. Each team had chances over the final two minutes to go in front but time expired with the score knotted and the match moved to a shootout.

For the Olympics, Irving finished third on the team in scoring with 12 goals. He also contributed five rebounds, four field blocks, won three sprints, and had one steal. Incoming freshman Ryder Dodd was fourth on the squad in scoring with eight goals. Team's USA's youngest player also added a team-high eight rebounds, was second in steals with seven, and added one field block. His older brother, Chase Dodd, provided three goals, four rebounds, three steals, and one field block.

Women's Indoor Volleyball
USA Women's National Team staff members Karch Kiraly (head coach), Alfee Reft (assistant coach) and Sue Enquist (culture consultant) claimed the Silver Medal following a 3-0 bout (18-25, 20-25, 17-25) with world No. 1 Italy on Sunday. Jordan Thompson of Cincinnati led Team USA with eight kills on 20 attempts. Italy's Paola Ogechi Egonu scored a match-high 22 points off 18 kills and four blocks.

The Italians only lost one set the for the entirety of the Olympics, coming in the opening round of pool play. Italy's Gold Medal marked the first time the country had ever medaled in indoor women's volleyball at the Olympics.
