UCLA 2024 Olympics Recap

Bruins Win 14 Medals at 2024 Olympic Games

August 12, 2024 | Bruin Athletics, Olympics

Current, former and future UCLA students won a total of 14 medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, capturing five gold, three silver and six bronze medals. Of the 49 Bruins representing their respective countries at the Games, 12 athletes won medals, and an additional five Bruins were coaches or staff on medal-winning teams. UCLA's all-time medal count now stands at 284 medals โ€“ 141 gold, 74 silver and 69 bronze.
ย
UCLA junior Jordan Chiles (2022-present) won UCLA's first medal, competing all four events to help the USA women's gymnastics team win its fourth-ever Olympic team gold medal. She added a bronze medal on the floor exercise to complete the set, as she had previously won a silver team medal at the 2020 Olympic Games. Chiles announced that she will return to compete for the UCLA Gymnastics team in the upcoming season.ย ย
ย
Former UCLA Track & Field athlete Rai Benjamin (2016-17) captured a pair of gold medals, winning the 400m hurdles and anchoring the USA's gold medal-winning 4x400m relay team. Benjamin now has four career Olympic medals, three gold and one silver. In Tokyo in 2020, he won gold in the 4x400m relay and silver in the 400m hurdles. Benjamin now ranks sixth all-time at UCLA with four Olympic medals and is tied with Ato Boldon and Steve Lewis for most medals in UCLA Men's Track & Field history. Benjamin's three gold medals ties for third-most by a Bruin, behind only swimmer Tom Jager, who recorded five, and sprinter Evelyn Ashford, who totaled four.
ย
Jrue Holiday (2009) became UCLA Men's Basketball's first-ever two-time Olympic gold medalist, helping lead Team USA to a 6-0 record. Holiday, who just two months ago led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Championship, contributed six points, four assists and one rebound in the 98-87 win over France in the gold medal game. The NBA Championship/Olympic gold medal double was also achieved by Holiday in 2021, as he won with the Milwaukee Bucks in June and with Team USA in August.
ย
Mallory Swanson, who played three spring games with the UCLA women's soccer team in 2017 before turning pro, scored the game-winning goal for Team USA as they defeated Brazil, 1-0, in the gold medal match. Swanson, in her 100th international appearance, tied for the tournament lead in points scored with 10, recording four goals and two assists. The United States went 6-0 in the tournament and outscored its opponents, 12-2, to win its fifth Olympic gold and first since 2012.ย
ย
Australian Bruins Sienna Green (2024-present) and Bronte Halligan (2017-19) earned silver medals in women's water polo, the first Olympic medals for the Aussie Stingers since 2012. The Australians advanced to the gold medal game after upsetting the United States in a penalty shootout in the semifinals but fell to World No. 1 Spain in the final, 11-9. Halligan recorded two assists and one field block in the game and finished the Olympics third on the team in scoring with eight goals. She also led the Aussies on defense with 12 steals and added three rebounds and two field blocks. Green, who will be a sophomore this coming season, scored three goals in Paris and contributed two rebounds and two field blocks.
ย
UCLA junior Daniella Ramirez earned a silver medal with the USA Artistic Swimming team, the first U.S. medal in artistic swimming since winning bronze in 2004. The U.S. opened the competition with a fourth-place showing in the technical routine and then earned second-place marks in the free routine and artistic routine to clinch second place.
ย
Three Bruins โ€“ incoming freshman Ryder Dodd (2024-present), junior Chase Dodd (2021-present) and alumnus Max Irving (2013-17) won bronze medals with USA Men's Water Polo after an 11-8 shootout win over Hungary. The U.S. captured its first Olympic medal since 2008. Irving finished third on the team in scoring with 12 goals, including one in the shootout. He also contributed five rebounds, four field blocks, won three sprints and had one steal. Ryder Dodd was fourth on the squad in scoring with eight goals. Team's USA's youngest player also added a team-high eight rebounds, was second in steals with seven and added one field block. His older brother, Chase Dodd, provided three goals, four rebounds, three steals and one field block.
ย
USA Men's Volleyball, guided by UCLA head coach John Speraw (1992-95), won bronze for the second time in the last three Olympics, sweeping Italy, 3-0, in the bronze medal match. Former student-athletes Micah Ma'a (2016-19) and Garrett Muagututia (2007-10) captured their first Olympic medals. Also contributing to Team USA's success was team leader Erik Sullivan (1992-95).
ย
Although not adding to the medal count as coaches, the USA Women's Volleyball coaching staff guided Team USA to the silver medal. Head coach and UCLA volleyball legend Karch Kiraly (1979-82), who himself won three Olympic gold medals (two in indoor volleyball, one in beach volleyball), has now coached the U.S. to four medals as a head coach or assistant coach โ€“ gold in 2020, silver in 2024 and 2012 and bronze in 2016. UCLA Women's Volleyball head coach Alfee Reft was an assistant coach on Kiraly's coaching staff in Paris, and UCLA Softball legend Sue Enquist (1975-78) was the team's Culture Consultant.
ย
Additionally, UCLA assistant diving coach Tom Daley captured a silver medal in the 10m synchronized diving event with fellow Great Britain athlete Noah Williams. With his fifth Olympic medal, Daley has become the most decorated British diver in Olympic history. (Note: Daley does not count in UCLA's medal count, which only includes UCLA students)
ย
Overall, 436 current Bruin students have combined to make 661 Olympic teams since the 1928 Games. UCLA, which was founded in 1919, has had at least one competitor in every Olympics since 1928, and Bruins have won a gold medal in every Olympics in which the U.S. has participated since 1932.
ย
UCLA will play a large part in the next Olympic Games in 2028, which will be held in Los Angeles, as the Olympic Village will be housed on the UCLA campus.ย
