UCLA Wins Home Opener, 3-0, Over UC Riverside
August 18, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – For the second consecutive match, No. 11/5 UCLA earned a 3-0 victory, this time downing UC Riverside in the Bruins' home opener at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The Bruins (2-0) held the Highlanders (0-2) to just one shot in the contest.
After a video review disallowed a third-minute goal by Meg Boade due to an offside call, Bridgette Marin-Valencia scored definitively in the 14th minute with her second goal of the season. Bella Winn started the play with a cross that was deflected off UCR goalkeeper Alee Grashoff. Marin-Valencia fought for the rebound with a nifty spin before firing off a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
Winn, who recorded an assist in the season opener, earned her first collegiate goal at 31:31, volleying a Boade chip over the goalkeeper's head to double the Bruins' lead.
UCLA opened the scoring early in the second half on an own goal that was set up by a cross from freshman defender Nicki Fraser. Fellow freshman Jordan Geis made a dangerous run on the end of the cross, but it was knocked in by a Riverside defender.
The Bruins finished the match with 24 shots, six on goal, while UCR's lone shot came in the 66th minute and was high by Daphane Mendez. Goalkeeper Ryan Campbell earned her second shutout as a Bruin. Grashoff had three saves for the Highlanders.
UCLA will next play on Thursday, Aug. 22 at Cal Poly. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
