Women's Basketball
Nirra Fields, Noelle Quinn and Team Canada concluded their time at the 2024 Olympics with a nine-point loss to Nigeria on Sunday (79-70). Fields totaled four rebounds in 11 minutes.
Germany finished group play with two wins and a loss, dropping Sunday's matchup against the United States, 87-68. Emily Bessoir made her Olympic debut on Sunday, playing just shy of nine minutes. She scored three points on an and-one layup and had an assist. Lina Sontag added two rebounds and a steal. Germany has advanced to the quarterfinal stage in women's basketball. The women's basketball quarterfinal draw will be determined at the end of the day on Sunday, with four quarterfinal matches set for Wednesday, Aug. 7. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Aug. 9.
Women's Volleyball
U.S. women's national team staff members Karch Kiraly (head coach), Alfee Reft (assistant coach) and Sue Enquist (culture consultant) punched their tickets to the women's volleyball quarterfinals in Paris on Sunday, securing a 3-0 sweep (29-27, 29-27, 25-20) over France. The U.S. finished pool play 2-1, while France did not take a set in its first Olympic appearance.
Former UCLA outside hitter Iman Ndiaye appeared in the final two sets for France and notched one kill on two swings.
The women's volleyball quarterfinals will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Team USA will take on Poland. As of Sunday afternoon, times had not been established for this Tuesday's quarterfinal matches (the first volleyball quarterfinal will begin at 12 a.m. PT, 9 a.m. local time in France).
Women's Water Polo
The Australian women's water polo team recorded a 14-12 victory over Hungary in a match that concluded with a penalty shootout on Sunday in group play at the Olympics. Former UCLA standout Bronte Halligan (2017-19) and current UCLA rising junior Sienna Green (2023-24) are competing for the Australian national team.
The match was tied, 9-9, through four regulation quarters before Australia out-scored Hungary, 5-3, in the penalty shootout. Australia finished the pool play portion of the Olympics with a perfect 4-0 mark (in Group A standings), advancing into the quarterfinals. Both Halligan and Green saw action in the win over Hungary – Halligan had four shot attempts in just under 28 minutes, while Green had one shot attempt in eight minutes.
Australia will face Greece in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Aug. 6. In addition, the U.S. women's water polo team will take on Hungary in a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday. Australia's match will take place at 10 a.m. PT (7 p.m. local time in France). Team USA's quarterfinal contest will begin at 11:35 a.m. PT (8:35 p.m. local time in France).
Track & Field
Stamatia Scarvelis (2015-16) made her second appearance at the Olympic Games on Sunday morning. Scarvelis competed in the women's hammer throw qualification round at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, recording a mark of 69.38m. She finished 17th in the world at the summer competition.
