UCLA WATER POLO UCLA WATER POLO
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Top-ranked UCLA (7-0) won its 32nd consecutive regular season game with a 17-16 overtime win over No. 7 Princeton (7-2) on Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. UCLA improved to 20-0 all-time against the Tigers.

A total of eight Bruins scored in the contest, paced by 10 total points (six assists, four goals) and the first hat trick of the year for graduate student Makoto Kenney. Kenney scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 1:45 mark of the second overtime period. Freshman Ryder Dodd also scored four goals and added one assist for five points. Redshirt sophomore Frederico Jucá Carsalade made a triumphant return into the water, scoring a hat trick in his first game of the season. Redshirt sophomore Ben Larsen was the fourth Bruin to score multiple goals with two against the Tigers.

Graduate student Garret Griggs got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying 10 saves while surrendering 16 goals.

Both teams battled to a 3-3 draw in the first period and a 5-5 draw in the second to head into the break tied at 8-8. Princeton won the third period, 3-2, to take an 11-10 lead into the final stanza.

The Bruins opened the fourth with a game-tying goal from freshman Peter Castillo (7:14) and then went up 12-11 on a second goal from Kenney (6:32). After Princeton tied it up (5:28), Dodd scored his fourth goal on a power play and an assist from Kenney (4:52) to put the Bruins back in front, 13-12. UCLA seemed to take control with its first two-goal lead of the game after Kenney completed his hat trick (3:45) to put the Bruins up 14-12. But Princeton scored back-to-back goals (3:28 and 2:35) to tie it up at 14-14. Griggs made the defensive play of the day, stopping a penalty shot by Vladan Mitrovic. Jucá Carsalade scored his second goal of the game with 0:13 remaining after an ordinary to make it 15-14. But Mitrovic scored on a 7-on-6 with 0:02 to go to send the game into overtime. But that was only after Kenney's shot at the buzzer from half-tank clanged the post.

Jucá Carsalade opened the scoring in the first extra frame when he converted a penalty shot that was drawn by sophomore Marcell Szécsi to complete his hat trick, putting UCLA in front 16-15. The Tigers' Ádám Peocz tied it at 16-16 with a power play goal (0:27) to end the scoring in the first overtime period. In the second overtime, the game-winning goal was scored by Kenney on a power play off an assist from redshirt junior Chase Dodd (1:45). Kenney would then get a steal on the Tigers' next possession and then Griggs would make a stop on a power play with 0:48 remaining. After the Bruins failed to score in their final offensive possession, the defense went to work again and made a final stop to provide the 17-16 final.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will face No. 15 UC San Diego (10:00 a.m. PT) and at No. 6 California (3:00 p.m. PT) in the final two pool play games of the 2024 Overnght/MPSF Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21.
