PASADENA, Calif. – The UCLA football team lost to No. 8 Oregon, 34-13, in a Big Ten Conference matchup at the Rose Bowl on Saturday evening.
Oregon (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) led from start to finish, claiming a 28-10 lead by halftime. The Ducks' second-half cushion never fell to any fewer than 15 points against UCLA (1-3, 0-2 Big Ten).
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 31 of 41 passes for 280 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception in the Ducks' first game in Big Ten action. Wide receiver Tez Johnson totaled a team-leading 11 receptions for 121 yards, while running back Jordan James registered a team-best 103 rushing yards (including one rushing touchdown).
"The game didn't go the way that we wanted it to go," UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster said. "But there were a couple bright spots. We were able to run the ball a little bit better in the second half. I think my defense played pretty well tonight, going against a high-powered offense like we did. We just didn't really execute the way that we wanted to offensively, to try to help our defense out."
UCLA's Ethan Garbers connected on 12 of 20 pass attempts for 118 yards. Bruins' kicker Mateen Bhaghani was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals, connecting on a career-best 54-yard field goal in the third quarter.
In the Bruins' second home contest of the season, Oregon outgained UCLA in total net yards, 433 to 172. The visiting Ducks tallied 280 yards through the air and 153 yards on the ground.
Oregon had secured a 28-10 advantage by halftime, totaling two touchdowns and two field goals in the second quarter.
Trailing 28-3 late in the second quarter, the Bruins capitalized on an interception by Bryan Addison with four seconds to play before the intermission. On a third-and-6 situation from Oregon's 6-yard line, Addison picked off Gabriel's pass near the goalline and raced 96 yards for the touchdown. Addison's touchdown cut Oregon's cushion to 28-10.
Oregon had pushed ahead, 17-3, early in the second quarter, taking advantage of an interception by Bryce Boettcher on a pass attempt from Garbers. Three plays later, Oregon darted into the end zone on a two-yard rush up the middle by James.
The Ducks led UCLA by a 10-3 margin early in the second quarter after Atticus Sappington kicked a 41-yard field goal at the 14:55 mark.
Oregon had scored the game's first points on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel to Traeshon Holden, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead.
The Bruins got on the board midway through the first quarter when Bhaghani converted a 27-yard field goal, cutting Oregon's advantage to 7-3.
UCLA will return to action at Penn State in a Big Ten Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 5. Game time at Penn State's Beaver Stadium is set for 9 a.m. PT (12 p.m. ET). The contest will be nationally televised on FOX.
