UCLA Shuts Down No. 5 Iowa, 3-0
October 16, 2025 | Women's Soccer
The three goals marked a season-high for the Bruins, who had fallen out of the rankings after being shut out in three straight matches. UCLA wasted no time in stopping that shutout streak, with a goal in the second minute of play before pulling away later in the game with a pair of second-half goals.ย
Ironically, as quickly as the Bruins scored that goal, Iowa came close to being the one to strike first, earning a corner kick in the first minute of play. The Bruins were able to defend, though, and quickly went on the counterattack. Bella Winn hit Croone, who dribbled down the field with three defenders chasing her, but Croone's shot in the box was saved by Hawkeye goalkeeper Taylor Kane.ย
Not even one minute later, Croone had a second opportunity, and she would not be denied. Oruha Hayashi set up the goal with a pass into the box to Emma Egizii, who played the ball to Croone. The sophomore forward received the pass and quickly fired to the far post past Kane for the early lead, her second goal of the year.

Things got even worse for Iowa at 5:07 when defender Sofia Bush took down Payten Cooper from behind in the box on a clear goal-scoring chance. Bush was awarded a red card, forcing the Hawkeyes to play short-handed for the next 85 minutes of the game. The Hawkeyes were fortunate to not go down 2-0 at the time when Cooper's penalty kick went wide.
The Bruins totaled 17 shots in the first half alone but just one goal to show for it. Things changed quickly in the second half, however. In the 60th minute, after a corner kick, Egizii threaded the needle on a hard left-footed shot that zipped past two defenders and Kane. ย

A pair of freshmen made the Bruins' final goal happen in the 74th minute. On a give-and-go, Grace Shank hit Julia Molnar just outside of the box. Molnar returned the ball to an open Shank, who took it into the box and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net for her first career goal. The assist was Molnar's first of her career.ย

UCLA finished the game with a season-high 31 shots and allowed just one shot, which did not come until the 79th minute and was saved easily by Daphne Nakfoor, who shared the shutout with Mariangela Medina. The shutout was UCLA's conference-leading 10th of the season. This was the second time this season the Bruins have allowed just one shot in the game.ย
UCLA improves to 9-4-2 on the year and 5-2-2 in the Big Ten. Iowa drops to 10-3-3, 5-2-2. The Bruins will next host Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1pm on Senior Day. The senior festivities will take place before the match. Tickets are on sale at uclabruins.com/tickets.
