LOS ANGELES --ย No. 2 UCLA (19-1, 3-1 MPSF West) rallied for its third win over No. 3 Stanford this season, defeating the third-ranked Cardinal in sudden death, 13-12, onย Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 87-92 against the Stanford Cardinal.

UCLA had eight different players score, paced by a team-high threeย goals for redshirt junior Frederico Jucá Carsalade, which included the game-winning golden goal to complete his third hat trick of the season. Juniors Marcell Szécsi andย Ben Liechty, as well as sophomore Ryder Dodd each scored twice for the Bruins.

Redshirt sophomore Nate Tauscher got the starting nod and went the distance, tallying 11 savesย while surrendering 12 goals.

UCLA jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. But Stanford outscored the Bruins, 5-2, in the second period to build a 6-5 lead at the break. Both teams battled to a 3-3 draw in the third to make it 9-8 Stanford heading into the fourth period.

The Bruins won the fourth, 3-2, to send the game to extra frames. Jucá Carsaladeย scored the first goal of the fourth to tie it at 9-9 (7:38). Former Bruin Gianpiero Di Martire put Stanford back in front (6:23), but Ryder Dodd scored back-to-back goals (5:40 and 4:29), his first goals of the game, to put UCLA back in front at 11-10. Di Martire scored a power play goal (3:49) to tie the game at 11-11. That would be the final score of regulation as both teams' defense would make multiple stops down the stretch.

Neither team scored in the first overtime. Then in the second OT period, Ryder Dodd would make a perfect pass to Szécsiย on aย power play (1:27) to put UCLA back in front at 12-11. But on the next possession for Stanford, Alex Gheorghe would score his second goal of the game on a backhanded shot from two meters (1:02) to send the game into sudden death time.

The Bruins won the opening sprint (UCLA actually won all six sprints in the game) to take the first shot at a golden goal but sophomore Peter Castillo's shot was high. Stanford's first shot by Ben Forer was field blocked away by redshirt senior Chase Dodd but Stanford grabbed the rebound. Then Chase McFarland tried to be the hero, but Tauscher was up to the challenge and made the stop. On the Bruins' next possession, Castillo drew a penalty thatย Jucá Carsaladeย converted to provide the game-winning goal, providing the 13-12 final.

Former Bruin Gianpiero Di Martire led the Cardinal (12-5, 1-3 MPSF West) with five goals, two field blocks, and one drawn exclusion.

Up Next: The Bruins host No. 4 California on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
