November 13, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – No. 3-ranked UCLA propelled itself past No. 11-UNC, 78-60, at the inaugural WBCA Challenge in Las Vegas Thursday night.
Senior Lauren Betts was named Most Outstanding Player after finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, a pair of blocks and a steal. The center shot 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line in the 18-point win by UCLA (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten). The Tar Heels (2-1, 0-0 ACC) drop their first game of the season with no answer for the Bruin big.
Senior Kiki Rice joined the elder Betts in club double-double with 15 points (6-12 FG) and 10 rebounds; the point guard scored all of her buckets in the second half to help lift UCLA past the Tar Heels. The Bethesda, Md., native secured her 500th-career rebound after her fourth Thursday evening.
The Bruins won the battle on the boards, securing 46 rebounds to UNC's 30. Gabriela Jaquez and Angela Dugalić added eight rebounds apiece to the 20 from Rice and Betts.
UCLA got out to a slow start, only scoring 12 points in the first quarter. Graduate student Charlisse Leger-Walker and Betts had a pair of buckets each, accounting for eight of UCLA's first period points.
Graduate transfer Gianna Kneepkens and Betts had back-to-back buckets – a three and a score at the rim – to tie it after the first quarter break. UCLA went 3-for-3 on its final shots of the quarter; the Bruins were 6-for-8 field goals to go into the half, including a slip by Betts to show off the midrange jump shot.
Betts had a game-high 12 points and seven rebounds at the break.
UCLA made its push in the second half, shooting 9-for-9 from the Bruins after missing their first two shots out of the break. Dugalić, who was 3-for-3 in the third, had seven of her 14 points in the period. Jaquez was the final Bruin in double figures, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Rice was the closer for UCLA, scoring eight fourth-quarter points for the Bruins to secure the second-consecutive top 15 win of the season.
Two-time softball all-American Megan Grant secured an offensive rebound in the closing seconds of the game and fought her way to the basket, scoring the first points of her collegiate basketball career.
