No. 3 UCLA Closes WBCA Challenge with Win over South Florida, 94-61

LAS VEGAS – No. 3-ranked UCLA improves to 5-0 after downing South Florida, 94-61. The Bruins and Bulls (2-2, 0-0 AAC) closed out the weekend in Michelob ULTRA Arena at the WBCA Challenge, a showcase organized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Graduate guard Charlisse Leger-Walker was named Most Outstanding Player for her efforts Saturday. The Waikato, New Zealand, native finished with 16 points (6-10 FG), seven assists, a block and a steal against South Florida. She was one of six Bruins in double figures.
UCLA had an even scoring effort on the night; senior Gabriela Jaquez shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field for 17 points. Seniors Lauren Betts and Gianna Kneepkens finished with 14 points apiece, graduate forward Angela Dugalić had 13 off the bench, and senior Kiki Rice rounded out UCLA's double-digit scorers with 12 points.
The Bruins started hot, shooting 6-for-9 going into first media break. Leger-Walker had 12 points for UCLA and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the opening period. Kneepkens made two of her three attempts from long distance in the quarter; both makes came off a pass from Betts. Freshman Lena Bilić got on the board for the final bucket of the quarter. With time winding down, the Croatian wing came off a screen to hit a midrange jump shot and give UCLA a 29-8 lead after one.
Leger-Walker assisted on both made baskets to start the second quarter, finding Dugalić and Betts for makes at the rim. Rice started to get active, cashing in a three off a kickout from Betts and a layup after Kneepkens came up with a steal. The point guard played all 10 minutes of the second frame.
The Bruins were 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the second quarter; Jaquez, Dugalić and Leger-Walker had trips to the line to account for six of those points under the two minute mark. UCLA led 55-32 at the break.
Betts made the first basket of the second half off Leger-Walker's fourth assist on the night. Kneepkens stayed active, assisting Rice after a UCLA offensive rebound and scoring off the glass a possession later. Dugalić lost her defender on a pass fake and gave herself an easy look under the rim.
Leger-Walker made her presence felt on the defensive end, tracking down a corner shooter for a block to prevent the Bulls from getting another long-range look. Two possessions later, the Kiwi point guard threw a dime from three-quarters court, finding Betts for an and-one layup in transition.
Dugalić cashed in a triple to get into double figures; redshirt-sophomore Amanda Muse laid it in before the third quarter buzzer for her first bucket of the night. Six Bruins achieved double-digit scoring before the fourth quarter began.
Jaquez continued her perfect shooting night with three fourth-quarter layups; two came in transition off steals that she and Bilić secured.
