No. 3 UCLA Beats San Diego State at Honda Center on Opening Night, 77-53

November 03, 2025 | Women's Basketball

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The No. 3 UCLA women's basketball team defeated San Diego State 77-53 on opening night in Anaheim, Calif., at the Honda Center on Monday. The Bruins never trailed in the game.

Senior Lauren Betts had an efficient start to her senior campaign, recording 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting and four rebounds in UCLA's (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) win over the Aztecs (0-1, 0-0 Mountain West).

Three other Bruins scored in double figures (Jaquez - 15, Leger-Walker – 12, Rice - 10), with senior Gabriela Jaquez earning the team's first double-double of the season. Jaquez finished Monday's win with 11 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.

UCLA almost doubled the Aztecs' total in rebounds, grabbing 49 compared to SDSU's 25. The Bruins also tripled the Aztecs in blocks, swatting nine shots to San Diego State's three. UCLA dominated the game in paint points, 48-20, and shot a stellar 86 percent from the free-throw line. The Aztecs converted just one of their three free throws in the game.

The Bruins started with a bang, beginning the game with eight-straight points in the paint to earn an 8-0 lead. After an Aztec timeout, the Bruins slightly lost rhythm, giving up two back-to-back 3-pointers and going on a three-minute scoreless drought. Betts and Leger-Walker both finished the quarter going 2-for-5 with four points to lead the team. Leger-Walker also recorded two steals in the first quarter.

UCLA dominated the second quarter, starting with Betts going a perfect 3-for-3 to record seven points. Jaquez shined in the second, collecting four points, five rebounds, and four assists in the quarter, which included an offensive rebound she snagged and passed to Betts for a score in the paint to start the quarter.  Graduate student Gianna Kneepkens showed she could perform on both ends of the court; she blocked a 3-point shot attempt and raced to the other side of the court, making a driving layup assisted by Kiki Rice. Redshirt-sophomore Amanda Muse added to the fun a minute later, collecting her own rebound to make a second-chance layup while drawing the foul.

The Bruins held a controlling lead of 37-22 at the half.

UCLA only furthered its lead in the third quarter. Another trio of field goals from Betts added eight more points to the board. Jaquez and Betts finishing the quarter shooting a perfect 3-for-3; Jaquez had seven points and another rebound. After starting the quarter off on a 7-2 run out of the gate, the Bruins forced the Aztecs to call a timeout. UCLA continued to build on the offensive momentum after the timeout, utilizing its ball movement and defense to go on a 16-0 run; the Bruins shot 66.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range in the quarter. The Bruins finished the quarter with 21 points, pushing the game's lead to 58-38.

The Bruins started the fourth quarter off with ease, with Leger-Walker finding Betts inside the paint, only for Betts to kick it out to Freshman Lena Bilić for a quick 3-pointer.

In the final three minutes of action, graduate student Angela Dugalić connected on her first 3-pointer of the night, giving Rice her fifth assist of the game. Rice continued to dominate, scoring two second-chance layups assisted by Muse.

The Bruins outscored the Aztecs 40-31 in the second half, shooting 62.5 percent compared to their 35.3 percent. UCLA also recorded four blocks in the second half to the Aztecs' zero as the Bruins captured the opening night win.
