SEATTLE โ The UCLA men's basketball team edged Washington, 82-80, in a Big Ten Conference game at Alaska Airlines Arena on the campus of the University of Washington on Wednesday evening.
ย
The Bruins (6-2, 1-0 Big Ten) led 76-60 with 4:45 to play in the second half before Washington (5-3, 0-1 Big Ten) used a ferocious scoring run to cut UCLA's lead to 78-77, with under 40 seconds to play. UCLA held on in the final minute on Wednesday, improving to 9-0 in its last nine conference-opening games, and 7-0 in those conference openers under Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach.
ย
"Conference basketball, you're not blowing anybody out," Cronin said. "We're in the Big Ten. They have real players, and they have a first-round draft pick [Hannes Steinbach]. Guy's a first-round draft pick. He's got 29 and 10 and 32 minutes, three assists, one steal. Great win for us. Obviously, we would have liked to put them away. Fatigue was a factor with no Trent [Perry]. Eric [Dailey Jr.] had foul trouble, which really took him out of the flow. Got his third immediately and his fourth immediately. He's got to grow out of that, because we really need him."
ย
Trailing by one point, at 78-77, with 36 seconds left in regulation, Donovan Dent dribbled the ball up the court before finding Skyy Clark on the wing. Clark was fouled in the act of shooting a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. He made all three foul shots, putting the Bruins ahead, 81-77.
ย
Washington's Zoom Diallo drove the basket, made a driving layup and drew a foul on the next possession. Diallo made the ensuing free throw to pull Washington to within a point of UCLA, at 81-80, with eight seconds to play.
