February 16, 2025 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. โ The No. 4-ranked UCLA softball team fell to Virginia, 7-6, in walk-off fashion in its final game at the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Sunday.
ย
Earlier in the game, the Bruins (9-1) overcame a 5-0 deficit with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. The Hoos' (5-5) Mary Caroline Eaton handed UCLA its first loss of the season with a two-run shot off reliever Kaitlyn Terry on a pitch up in the zone.
ย
UCLA concluded the tournament 4-1, moving its all-time record in Clearwater to 18-4. Junior infielder Jordan Woolery led the team with a .571 batting average (8-for-14), six runs batted in and two home runs. Freshman Aleena Garcia ranked second behind Woolery with a .429 clip (6-for-14) and put on a show defensively, recording 20 assists at shortstop; the next closest UCLA player had seven assists.
ย
Virginia jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to a pair of two-RBI triples by Macee Eaton in the first inning and Jade Hylton in the second โ both off UCLA starter Taylor Tinsley. The Hoos bunted twice for base hits in the second inning, the latter of which driving in the team's fifth run.
ย
Jessica Clements started the Bruins' comeback in the top of the third inning with the first of her two bunt singles of the day. A walk to Savannah Pola and walk to Woolery loaded the bases for Kaniya Bragg who plated UCLA's first run on a fielder's choice hit towards the shortstop. The next batter Seneca Curo punched a three-run homer through the 15-mile-per-hour winds to left field to trim Virginia's lead to one, 5-4.
ย
Curo entered the year with five home runs over five previous seasons at UCLA. Through 10 games in 2025, the Barona, Calif. native has homered three times.
ย
Addisen Fisher entered the circle for relief in the third and spotted 3.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
ย
Clements recorded the 200th hit of her career with another bunt single in top half of the fourth. Sheย was moved into scoring position on an infield single by Pola. The next batter Woolery smacked a single to left center to drive home Clements for the game-tying run. Bragg stepped to the plate after a flyout by Grant, and with two outs, knocked in the go-ahead run with a single through the right side.
ย
Terry held Virginia off the board after entering the bottom of the fifth with two on base and one out in the fifth and followed that with a three-up, three-down sixth. In the seventh, Terry walked UCLA's first batter of the game on four pitches to bring aboard the tying run before Mary Caroline Eaton hit the game-deciding homer.
