LOS ANGELES โย The UCLA baseball team came out on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel, falling to Arizona State, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Despite an excellent start from right-handed pitcher Luke Rodriguez, UCLA (7-2) was unable to ignite its offense, matching a season-low with just four hits. Arizona State's (7-2) pitching staff shut out the Bruins while racking up 12 strikeouts in the game.ย

Starting pitcher Derek Schaefer limited UCLA to just two hits in his four innings of scoreless ball.

Rodriguez was brilliant in his first start of the season, keeping the Sun Devils off the board in his five-inning outing, matching the longest of his career. The 6-foot-4 righty surrendered just two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Roman Martin enjoyed a multi-hit day while Mulivai Levu and Jarrod Hocking were the only other Bruins to record a hit on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a true pitchers' duel through six complete innings as neither team advanced a runner past first base. In the top of the seventh, ASU finally placed the game's first runner in scoring position after a walk and a wild pitch moved Landon Hariston to second base.ย

The visitors took advantage of the opportunity when Isaiah Jackson smacked a two-out RBI double to break the scoreless tie. Another two-out base hit added another run for ASU, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh-inning stretch.

UCLA placed a runner in scoring position for the first time when Martin singled through the right side, advancing Roch Cholowsky to second base. Despite having two runners on with one out, the Bruins were unable to mount a comeback and fell 2-0.
