March 01, 2025 | Baseball
ย
UCLA (8-3) used a five-run fifth inning to take a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Freshman Wylan Moss held UConn (1-7) scoreless over two innings of work to earn the six-out save, his second of the year.
ย
Brennan scored twice and notched his second triple of the season. Salgado collected two hits and a walk, reaching base three times in total, and Call delivered in the clutch with a pair of two-out RBIs.
ย
Mulivai Levu smashed his fourth home run of the season, while Blake Balsz had a standout day, reaching base four times with a hit and three walks.
ย
CJ Bott earned his first collegiate win after relieving starting pitcher Ian May in the fifth frame. August Souza also made his UCLA debut on the mound in the sixth inning.
ย
A two-out solo home run off the bat of Tyler Minnick gave the visitors an early lead in the top of the first inning.
ย
UCLA evened up the contest in the bottom of the second inning when Brennan legged out a leadoff triple and Jarrod Hocking promptly plated him with an RBI groundout.
ย
Levu smacked an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the third to give UCLA the lead. The solo homer was the fourth of the year for the Bruins' leader in big flies.
ย
Salgado's liner found the right-field corner in the bottom of the fourth for UCLA's second triple of the day, then in a 2-2 count, Call came up with the clutch two-out RBI base hit to extend the Bruins' lead.
ย
In UConn's next trip to the plate, Rob Rispoli launched a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3. This brought an end to May's outing after 4.1 innings.ย
ย
UCLA regained the lead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth, all with two outs. Cameron Kim ignited the inning with a crucial two-RBI single through the right side with the bases loaded. The rally continued as Call ripped an RBI single that was too hot for the second baseman to handle. West then capped it off by slapping a ground ball through the left side, bringing Call home and securing a five-run inning for the Bruins.
ย
UConn scored twice in the sixth and added one more in the seventh to make it a two-run ballgame.
ย
Moss entered in the eighth inning as he was asked to get the six-out save. The right hander worked through a stress-free eighth before he showed excellent composure to work around a leadoff single in the ninth to convert the save opportunity, preserving UCLA's 8-6 victory.

The Bruins wrap up the Southern California College Baseball Classic tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they take on USC for the 424thย edition of the Crosstown rivalry. Landon Stump will get the start for UCLA. The game will be available for viewing on B1G+.
